10 Lessons on Success from Albert Einstein

It’s a truism that if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting the same results. As Albert Einstein warned, when you keep doing the same things and expect to get different results, you will drive yourself to insanity. Below are some other nuggets of wisdom from this German-born physicist who brought us the theory of relativity and the world’s most famous equation (E = mc2) and who, by most accounts, was the most important physicist of the 20 century. As you’ll discover, Einstein, though a scientist, had extraordinary wisdom, matched only by his humility.

1. Use creativity to solve your problems

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

2. Be a realist. Ruthlessly eliminate your biases

“A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.”

“Common sense is a collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.”

3. For success, creative imagination is all-important

“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

“Logic will take you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”

“To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle requires creative imagination…”

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

4. Provide value in everything you do

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”

“Concern for man and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavours. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations.”

5. Ensure your business is simple to understand

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

6. Do not allow mistakes to get you down

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

7. Be a person of character and integrity

“Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.”

“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.”

“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

8. Form powerful alliances

“Computers are incredibly fast, accurate and stupid; humans are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant; together they are powerful beyond imagination.”

9. Be very curious. Become a lifelong learner

“Once you stop learning, you start dying.”

“The only source of knowledge is experience.”

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reasons for existing.”

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

“The man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.”

10. Play better than everyone else

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

These inspirational quotes reveal much about Einstein the man: a humble ‘man of the people’ who prioritised creativity, value and character. Apply these three constructs to your life and success will surely come your way.
