10 Reasons Why You Are Not Getting a Job Offer

So you are attending dozens of job interviews but you are getting rejected time after time. Whom or what should you blame for that? Well, if you constantly fail to receive an offer for jobs that you are qualified for, then the problem is most likely to be on your part.

Even if you have written a winning CV and cover letter or have arrived on time at the interview and have given a firm handshake, there are still plausible reasons why you did not get the offer. Here are a few… 

#1 You don’t have a clear goal

To begin with, failing to plan is planning to fail. The truth is, failing to set clear goals may eliminate you from the recruiter’s shortlist. Start by identifying yourself, figure out your strongest work abilities, what you want to achieve and how far you want to go. This will help the potential employer better understand your background, who you are as a person, and to better decipher whether your visions, aspirations match are a good match for the company.

#2 You may lack enthusiasm

You don’t have to emulate Tony Robbins or Joan Rivers, but adding a bit of enthusiasm for the job you are applying for would do wonders and it will say a lot to the hiring manager about how good your attitude will be after you’re hired. Also, in the same light, it is equally important to follow up after the interview and send a thank-you note.

#3 Failure to establish your worth to the prospective employer

When you show the hiring manager that you are more concerned about what the employer can do for you rather than the value you offer then chances are that the job opportunity will be lost. If you have six years of progressively responsible experience as a web developer, make sure to demonstrate the value you bring to the employer and his needs. During the interview, try to establish your value by demonstrating how your expertise and skills can solve many of the employer’s problems.

#4 Badmouthing previous employers

When asked “Why are you making a career change?” don’t fall into the trap of saying the worst about your current or previous employer. Instead, try to put a positive spin on your job search, saying that you are looking for a better job opportunity. Badmouthing your previous employer says more about your ethos and attitude rather than the company itself, so keep the negative thoughts to yourself.

#5 You are simply not qualified

Well, you have nothing to lose by applying for a job that is outside your level of expertise. You could overstate your qualifications but sooner or later the interviewer will find out that you are not the right fit for the job because you lack the necessary skills or experience. However, applying for every job that doesn’t match your profile and qualifications could be seriously wasting your precious time and effort which could be otherwise spent on more crucial aspects of job searching or interview preparation.

#6 Poor personal appearance

It is not farfetched to say that sometimes how you appear or the way you are dressed can eliminate you before you open your mouth! What is important to know here is that you must fit in with the way others in the company dress.  So do your research, get the inside scoop to find out what the office attire is at the company and adapt your dressing habits accordingly.

#7 You do little or no research

You can bet the interviewer is well prepared for the conversation, and so you need to be too. Wow the employer and impress them with your meeting preparation skills by showing that you know what you are getting into and how you will handle it. Dig deep in the company’s website or LinkedIn profile and any other useful informational sources. Do try to read employer reviews from sites such as The Job Crowd, GlassDoor,, etc.

#8 Revealing your weaknesses   

At the job interview, the interviewer will likely ask you the dreaded question “What is your biggest weakness?” So how do you go about answering that question? Your aim here is to identify a work-related weakness and neutralise it to your own advantage. #9 You demonstrate sloppiness

This can take many forms. It could be a bad resume with spelling and grammar mistakes, lots of employment gaps and poor structure to a rumpled appearance at an interview. Recruiters do not hesitate to file these resume applications in the ‘bad’ category and disqualify applicants. If you seem lazy or simply unaware of the industry do’s and don’ts then forget about getting the job offer you are longing for.

#10 You haven’t selected the right references

Did you give your potential new employer the details of a referee who doesn’t have your best interests at heart? That’s a problem you need to address, and fast. Be sure to coach your selected referees and prepare them for the call. Let them know about the position you have applied for, what skills they should focus on when they are contacted by the employer.
