Companies regard a prospective employee’s track record as the best proof of their demeanor in the working environment. It is their history that will tell them how they act and definitely anticipates how they will perform eventually, so they do the background check. If there are traces for having a pattern of constantly leaving jobs, an employer might have a doubt on hiring them.
Research from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that workers these days stayed on their jobs merely on the span of 4.6 years. And so there is a negative impression for job hopping. This is a thriving issue that needs more attention. It leads to companies wasting time looking for new personnel to fit the role and train them. Worse to the job hopper, it’s the unemployment world that they have to confront. It must have been hard for them to lose a way of living, but why are they not afraid to lose a job in the first place? I observed it in the group of young people who had just graduated years ago from college to those who had aged in a work setting but still can’t stay longer in a job. Here’s what I’ve come across:
Mastery of their duty – This way of thinking is more from those who had counted years on their work but are disappointed for the reward they are receiving. They already acquired the ability and mastered the skills. They think they are given less than expected for the volume of the responsibility they take every day. They feel that they do more and struggle more than their superior. The result is that they’re not happy anymore with the way things are going on. They will never get the reward they wish for after all, so why stay?
Monotonous assignment – There are just some people who like adventure, and task done over and over can annoy them. Many fresh graduates have this principle. They are having a hard time making decisions. When they do, they want to change it again. They have brief period focusing on things and simply get bored on routines. In the end, hunting for another different job would be the only way to get out of the situation.
Career Addiction – I coined it “Career Addiction” because these people have certain obsession on trying lots of careers. They feel like time not spent on learning new vocation is such a big waste. The tendency is they land much jobs but failed to master any of them. They turned out being “Jack of all trades, master of none”.
Job hopping has gained pessimism in the business world. But take a look at it again; there are grounds why people are doing it consistently. May I quote one of Steve Jobs’ famous lines? It’s been my favorite for quite some time. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking.
