Setting goals for the future is a good thing, but creating imaginary career deadlines can have the opposite result. Just forget these career deadlines.
We are very greedy creatures. We want everything to be perfect, and we want our lives to unfold exactly the way we plan. This, of course, includes having the perfect career and dream job by the time we are in our twenties. But, not everything is within our control and often the career deadlines we set ourselves don't really matter.

You have been living with deadlines for nearly your whole life. Since you were seventeen, you worked your butt off to get those high grades so that you can get into a good college and find a decent job. But, don’t you think it’s time to stop torturing yourself with these high – and most of the times, unrealistic expectations? While managing your career and having certain goals in life is important, setting deadlines in your career only makes it harder for you to achieve your career aspirations.
Here are some career deadlines that you have probably already set yourself that don’t matter and you should stop worrying about right now.
1. Getting a Promotion Every Two Years
Even though you would expect to get a promotion at some point in your career, it doesn’t mean that this will continue to happen every two years. Well, this might have been the case in the past – before the financial crisis hit, but with employers being more economically reserved than ever before, a promotion is never guaranteed.
But, this also largely depends on the company itself including the company’s goal and the number of opportunities they have available for every employee. While some employers have a schedule for promoting their staff, they are looking out for the company’s best interests first and foremost.
2. Make Over $100,000 by Your Thirties
Let’s face it; salary is important in every job. This is how you pay the rent, shop your groceries, retain your luxurious lifestyle, and it’s always something to look for in a job. But, when this becomes the one element that drives your career decisions, and you are setting a deadline around it, this isn’t healthy for you.
While making over a certain amount of money is possible by your thirties, it usually takes more effort and dedication on your behalf than you imagine. Also, finding a job that doesn’t offer high pay may be better than settling for one that gives you the salary you want. Sacrificing your happiness to get more money, isn’t always the way to go.
3. Leave Your Job in Three Years
No matter what it says in your employment contract, your job tenancy may last longer than three years. In fact, sometimes it should. When you are in a job that you enjoy and gives you what you need, there is no reason to quit after your three-year deadline expires.
If you are planning to leave the company at some point, then you aren’t really focusing on what’s important and can ignore opportunities that come your way. So perhaps it’s better to focus on what you can do now; what you can learn in your current position and expand your professional knowledge step by step.
Instead of stressing over imaginary career deadlines you create for yourself, it is best that you relax and enjoy the ride. You never know how long you will be working at the company you are in now. But chances are you are going to enjoy a much more fulfilling career when you learn to accept things as they come.
