4 Important Sales Tricks That Will Get You The Job

Closing, always be closing. If there is one thing that the sales world can teach anyone is achieving goals in the most efficient (if not most ethical) way possible. People working in sales are one-minded, focused like a sniper on their target and often relentless. One pitch, one sale.

Here is a little list of sales tricks that you can use to get that job, and put that coffee down because coffee is for closers only.

1. Admitting Deficiencies

Yes, you read that right, although counterintuitive according to social psychologist Fiona Lee, people perceived companies as more trustworthy when they admitted to their deficiencies instead of faulting other factors for their problems. This is due to the fact that when people or an organization admits to a failing it means that they want to change, evolve and remedy that negative situation and the things that caused it in the first place. So, if you were fired from your previous job, don’t jump the gun and say: “My boss was a micro-managing, micro-phallic idiot” and instead try “I should’ve been more aware and sympathetic to my supervisor’s managerial style, but lesson learned.”

2. Shared Values

Although this might be difficult to discern but if you can find a cause or charity the company you want to work at, or even better, their hiring manager is passionate about, wedge it into your resume- it could increase your chances of getting a call back. A poll taken of a large group of consumers showed that 64% felt a strong relationship with a company that had shared values with them. Look at how popular companies such as Toms shoes and Wholefoods are both dedicated to a high level of social engagement.

3. Instant Gratification

Okay, so let’s talk for a second about brain science. When we are waiting and pondering on something, our prefrontal cortex, which is involved in the processing of many, many complex interactions, but we’ll concentrate on the most pertinent to our conversation is associated with decision making. Activity in prefrontal cortex during a sales interaction is a big no-no, and in our case when trying to get the job. The way sale-people avoid this is by engaging the person’s need for immediate gratification, by promising quick delivery or, for example, free things if the primary product/service ordered at that moment. So, when job searching try to be available immediately, because sometimes its better being Mr./Ms. Right-now instead of Mr./Ms. Right.

4. Scarcity

Have you ever seen those infomercials that run in the middle of the night when everyone is sleeping and/or drunk? Of course you have, the one thing those overly excited, way too loud spokespeople do when trying to hawk their wares on the Shopping Network is scream “LIMITED OFFER, LIMITED NUMBER OF PRODUCTS BUUYYYYY NOW!!!”

Now, I bet you are looking baffled, probably trying to figure out how that can apply to job seeking, well, my friend worry not you’re in good hands. When creating or editing your resume try to think about what personal experiences can make you seem unique or distinguish yourself from other applicants. Something like military experience, a multi-cultural upbringing or a unique life experience can make you a scarcity amongst the other applicants.
