5 Must-Have Password Managers

Managing passwords can be a very tricky affair. First, if your password is not strong enough, your account might end up being hacked. Secondly, if you have multiple passwords, you are likely to forget some of them. Fortunately, there are some tools that can make managing your passwords much easier.

1. LastPass

This is a nifty tool that remembers your passwords, thus freeing you to focus on more important tasks. LastPass also helps you assess your passwords and choose stronger ones. It even automatically alters your password in case your account has been compromised or hacked. This tool allows two-step authentication for your password and comes with other great features such as secure document and password storage, credit monitoring, tools to auto-fill forms, and credit monitoring. LastPass is compatible with a wide range of browsers, operating systems and mobile devices. It comes in a version which is free to download and use, as well as a premium version that has additional features.

2. KeePass

Unlike other tools which upload or sync passwords on external servers, KeePass stores passwords in an encrypted database within your own system. You can configure your databases with multiple keys which can be shared among limited users. It has an inbuilt password generator which enables you to choose strong and unique passwords. KeePass also comes with a wide range of third-party tools and plugins which allow it to function across several platforms, browsers and devices. This includes the autotype functionality which enables it to login to numerous system dialogs, applications and sites.

3. 1Password

1Password is an easy-to-use and flexible password manager which comes with a wide range of great features. This includes a password generator which allows you to select strong passwords, a password ‘recipe’ builder which allows you to customize your passwords, and a digital wallet for payment info and bank accounts. One of the best things about this tool is that it can be used locally without having to sync any information online. However, if you want to use multiple devices, you can sync your passwords on encrypted shared vaults or folders. 1Password comes with plugins for Safari, Firefox, Opera and Chrome, and is compatible with OS X, iOS, Android, and Windows. You can download and try out the tool, after which you can pay a one-time fee for the premium product.

4. RoboForm

Just like other password managers, RoboForm allows you to choose between syncing your passwords on the Internet and across devices or keeping your information encrypted and local. If you choose to use encrypted folders, you can simply carry RoboForm on a flash drive and use it on different computers. This password manager supports multiple identities, meaning that you can use different usernames and addresses in your auto-fill form information. It comes with bookmarking features which allow you to monitor your favorite sites. RoboForm supports a wide range of browsers and operating systems.

5. Dashlane

Dashlane is well-known for its attractive interface, easy auto-login, form auto-fill, simple security, and logging of orders and purchases from ecommerce stores. It allows you to change multiple passwords on different sites quickly, as well as share passwords with emergency contacts. When your account is hacked, this password manager will notify you and allow you to reset the password. The digital wallet and purchase tracking features enables you to buy goods and services from online stores without having to open an account first. Though Dashlane is free to download and use, you will have to pay to sync your passwords across devices.
