If you want to make the most of 2016 career wise, then you will need a plan. Whether this year’s resolutions will have you looking for a new job or seeking the promotion you have been waiting for so long, it should be your priority to make it happen. In that sense, it’s not enough to dream about it, you also have to do something about it.

Building a solid career plan will help you define your targets for this year as well as stay true to your long-term goals. In order to help you develop in your career, you will need to make some changes that will help you attain your goals smarter and quicker.

So, here is what you need to do this year:

1. Revise Your Network

Whether you are looking for a new job or hoping to find better alternatives to the current job, it should help you expand your network to get found for the right opportunities. But even if that’s not your ultimate goal, you should assess who out of the people you have in your network have something valuable to teach you. Revise your circle of contacts – as well as those individuals that you surround yourself with every day, make friends in higher places and seek the company of those who can inspire you to do better work.

2. Find Smart Ways to Develop Your Skills

You never stop learning and investing in lifelong learning has become more important than ever. It’s always good to be up-to-date and getting more expertise in your chosen field – or in another industry if that’s what you want. Coursera and edX have made it easier for you to advance your skills and knowledge in any discipline offering online courses that can be suited to your busy lifestyle. Why not take advantage of some of that knowledge?

3. Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Once in a while, you have to do something that’s out the ordinary. While it can be scary to get out of your comfort zone and try new things, it is essential to move forward. This puts some challenges in your way, but those are there to help you develop and see things from a different perspective. Accomplishing something that you never thought you could do will boost your confidence and make you more ambitious.

4. Work on Your ‘What Do You Do’ Reply

How many times have you been asked this question? This is the most common question someone asks you when you meet for the first time. While it seems like a simple and insignificant question, it provides more information that you think. The way you answer shows how much you believe in yourself and how confident you are in your abilities. So, crafting a good reply will show other professionals the impression that you know what you are doing and will encourage discussion. Instead of just stating your job title, explain how you help people day-by-day. This is important if you want to effectively market yourself to other people and as such get found for the right opportunity.

5. Speak Up

There is no point in staying in a situation that doesn’t make you happy, so perhaps it’s high time to change some things for yourself. So let’s say you don’t enjoy your job anymore, find another one or speak up and tell others how you feel. Perhaps 2016 is the year you will get to confront your boss, ask for a raise and make things work for you!

There is so much that you can do for your career in terms of developing your skills, enhancing your networking efforts, or advancing your job hunting techniques. What you consider as the top priority is what you will make your goal for this year, so it’s up to you to decide which out of these career moves you will follow.
