5 Things You Need to Start Doing For Yourself

Some people say you need to be selfish to get what you want out of life. While this is true, the word ‘selfishness’ doesn’t seem to be quite appropriate when put in this context. Although it sounds like a bad thing to say, it merely explains how self-awareness and self-preservation can help you achieve your aspirations and goals. It refers to being productive and taking care of yourself every step of the way.

For some reason, being selfish can also be beneficial for your family. If you are happy and healthy they are too. However if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to help them the same way nor teach them how to be present and active in their own lives.

So, here are the 5 things you need to start doing for yourself:

1. Develop your identity

Sometimes you are so influenced by others that you often find yourself lost in the clutter. This is quite common for people who are in long-term relationships and have become so identical to their partners that they even forgot who they really are. It’s ok to make compromises for the person you love, but you should never forget what your interests are, your priorities and your purpose in life.

Find your true self and embrace your individuality because let’s face it, there’s no one in the world who shares the same personality and physical characteristics as you do. In other words, express yourself freely without purposely trying to meet anyone’s expectations. Be yourself and love yourself.

2. Take care of your body and soul

If you don’t take care of yourself, nobody else will. Put some time aside for you to get fit and healthy. Treat your body as your temple, seen as you will have the same one your whole life, and make sure to take good care of it and feel good in it. Also, don’t get comfortable in the way you live your day to day life; whether this is associated with your personal or career life, make it your goal to learn something new every day so that you have the chance to develop as an individual. Don’t stand behind closed doors, instead keep them open and think outside of the box.

3. Listen to your needs

Caring for yourself doesn’t mean you are self-absorbed. Listen to what your mind and body tells you and always remind yourself that you are special too. Above all, don’t put everyone else’s needs above your own. Go after your passion and take some time off from work when you need it. After all you don’t have to feel guilty about taking some ‘me’ time.

4. Be honest to yourself

As much as you may think you can hide from yourself, the truth is that you can’t and you never will. Unless you admit things aren’t okay and that there’s something you need to change in your life, you won’t be able to be truly happy. Take some time to think about how you can improve your life and be honest with yourself. Take risks but don’t put unrealistic demands on yourself such as unhealthy dietary restrictions or any other limitations that prevent you from enjoying life to the fullest.

5. Maintain high standards

Take a look at the people around you and figure out how they make you a better person. Identify who your real friends are and remove people who strip away your happiness from your life. Instead, choose to hang out with people who are able to recognise your worth and appreciate you for who you are. Don’t try to make yourself likeable for them. If someone wants you in their life, they will make room for you.

Maintaining high standards is all about respecting yourself and getting back what you deserve. So if you find that either your friends or your partner are not treating you the same way you teat them, there’s no point in including them in your life; they surely don’t deserve your time or effort.

In order to start doing things for yourself, you have to be able to look deeper. Find out what it is that you want to do that will make you happy and work on achieving that no matter the odds. If you don’t know what that is yet, think about what you can do today that your future self will thank you for in the years to come. Get out there and while you are at it, don’t forget to have fun!
