5 Tips for Writing a Bio Like a Pro

 A professional bio is an important tool in your arsenal to further your career networking goals. The bio will serve as a first impression to communicate who you are and what you do. Crafting an effective bio takes careful planning and an understanding of the basic purpose for writing one. This article will address five tips for how you can write a bio like a pro.

1. Ascertain Your Goal

Writing a bio like a pro begins with ascertaining your specific goal. If you don’t even know why you’re writing this bio and who your target audience is, then you’ll have a difficult time creating an effective bio. For example, if you are a freelance writer, your bio should reflect your specific professional goals and what you want people to immediately understand about your writing career.

2. Use a Narrative Mode

Your bio is basically self-serving as it describes you, your talents and goals in a concise manner that is meant to effectively communicate with networking prospects. In regard to the style and tone of your bio take a look at your favorite novel and the author’s bio. As a general rule, bios need to be written in the third person as in “Joseph is an accomplished freelance writer…” instead of “I am a freelance writer.” The purpose of this narrative mode is to showcase your bio in an objective light. It is supposed to appear impartial rather than self-serving.

3. Format Effectively

Additionally, it is important to format your bio effectively. There are three basic lengths that your bio should be formatted to fit—minishort and long. The mini bio consists of a sentence length of content. People can utilize this mini bio during an introduction at a networking event as well as for the bio on some of your social media accounts like Twitter. With regard to your short bio, the length should be one paragraph and consist of no more than 75 to 100 words. You need to cover the general basics of who you are, what you do, and your basic experience. The long bio covers all the bases of you as a professional. 5. Proofread and Edit

Do not forget to proofread and edit your bio. Mistakes can dampen any chances you have of networking with the right contacts and furthering your professional development and advancing your career. Don’t simply rely on spellcheck. Ask a trusted friend or colleague to read over your bio and proofread the content. In addition to catching any mistakes, this person may actually have helpful input regarding new content to add.
