To accomplish anything worthwhile in life, motivation is very important. When you are motivated, you are able to stay focused on your goals despite the obstacles along the way. However, there are some motivation killers you need to avoid:
1. Negative news
Every day, we are receiving news from sources such as the internet, newspapers, social media, TV, radio or people around us. Positive news will motivate you and give you confidence to face what is ahead. On the other hand, negative news will only drain your energy and leave you feeling discouraged. For instance, when you constantly read or listen to news which gives gloomy forecasts of the economy, you might lack the motivation to start a new business. Therefore, if you want to stay motivated, spend more time listening to uplifting news.
Haters are people who are out to belittle, hurt, undermine and sabotage you. Such people do not want to see you succeed and will do everything possible to bring you down. Haters are basically driven by envy. Despite all your achievements and accomplishments, they will never have anything good to say about you. Instead, they will look for ways of making you look bad so they can feel good about themselves. Be sure to avoid and ignore such people at all costs.
Your goals, aspirations and dreams cannot come true if you don’t take any action. Prolonged failure to take action can cause you to become indifferent towards your ambitions. Therefore, to avoid losing motivation, it would be advisable to take action as fast as possible. It does not matter how big or small it is; just do something. As you complete one step successfully, you will have more confidence for the next step.
4. Pushing yourself too hard
While pursuing their goals, many people make the mistake of pushing themselves too hard. As a result, they end up experiencing burn out, which kills their motivation and hinders their momentum. Therefore, while taking action towards your ambitions, you need to know when to drop everything and take a break. Such breaks will refresh you physically, reduce stress, enhance your productivity and allow you to think of new ideas.
5. Dwelling on the past
Everyone has experienced some setbacks at one time or another in their lives. Focusing on your past failures and disappointments can be a real motivation killer. It lowers your self-confidence and robs you of the enthusiasm to try something new. Therefore, you need to avoid the temptation of dwelling on past issues. Instead, learn from your mistakes and move one. Don’t allow your past failures to define you.
We are all surrounded by family, friends, acquaintances and celebrities that have experienced success in different areas of their lives. As a result, you might be tempted to compare yourself with others and be jealous of their success. However, being envious only lowers your self-esteem and kills your motivation. Instead of being jealous of others, allow their successes to inspire you. Learn how to appreciate your uniqueness and don’t try to be a copy of someone else.
