An essential element of preparing for an interview is learning as much as possible about the company. Displaying knowledge about the company during the interview will make you appear competent, thus increasing your chances of success. One of the best ways of getting information about a company is by visiting its official website.

Here are some of the things you can learn from a company’s website:

1. Company overview

A company’s website can reveal some basic facts about the company. From the ‘About Us’ page, you can learn when the company was started and by whom. You can also discover where the company’s headquarters are located and how many people it employs. In addition, you can learn about the services and products offered, as well as the kind of customers targeted. Finally, the website can show you how the company is structured.

2. Mission statement

News concerning major companies and mid-sized companies is usually featured on national and local media outlets. This could be news about annual reports, product launches or new appointments. When you visit the company’s website, you are likely to find links to such news items. Other companies also issue regular press releases which are published on their online newsletters or company blogs. You can also connect with the company on their social media pages to find out what they are saying to their followers and fans. Take the time to read such news pieces and the information could come in very handy during your interview. For instance, you could ask ‘I was intrigued to read about your new strategic plan in the news. Could you please tell me more?’

6. Financials

Most major companies listed on the stock exchange usually have a page on their site showing investors their annual reports. Visiting this page will give you an idea of what investments the company is making and whether it is profitable. You can also determine if the company is growing by comparing the financial reports over the past few years.

You don’t have to know everything about a company before applying for a job. However, you need to have enough information to show that you did your homework. What you know about the company should even determine whether or not you should take an offer of employment.
