8 Things to Keep in Mind When You Think You’re Not Worthy

Ok, so you are thinking about trying something new, or you are thinking about doing something you have always wanted to do, but for some reason you just can’t seem to get over that feeling that you aren’t worthy enough to do it or you feel that you don’t have the self-discipline to succeed. We have all been there before, we have stood at a precipice of life and looked ahead at everything in front of us and thought “You know, I don’t know if I can do this, I don’t have anything that I need to make this happen.” You think to yourself "Maybe I’m not good enough to do this.", or maybe you just start feeling like someone like you doesn’t deserve an opportunity like this, like you aren’t worthy of the opportunity.

The truth is, there is only one thing you need in order to achieve the impossible, and that one thing is you. If you want to get past those feelings of inadequacy and start living the life of your dreams, read this article for eight things to keep in mind when you think you aren’t worthy.

1. You’ve done “stuff” before

I am sure that there has been some point, some moment, in your life where you thought you weren’t good enough or you weren’t worthy enough to get something that you wanted. Maybe it was a significant other, a job, or maybe just a piece of clothing you thought you couldn’t afford: the truth remains though, that if you look back on your life, you can surely find instances where you exceeded expectations and did things you thought you never would or could. Let your past be a reminder of the potential that is still sleeping within you today.

2. The only way to improve is to practice

Did you make the first basket you ever shot? Did you get an A+ on the first test you ever took? Did you jump out of the womb and take a leisure stroll through the delivery room? I didn’t think so, and whether you are learning to ride a bike, or just trying to land that new career you want, you have to remember that the only way to develop the skills you need to be successful is to get out there and practice. Don’t think of life in terms of win or lose, but rather, think of it in terms of gradual improvement. If you aren’t good enough right now, and if you don’t feel you are worthy of this opportunity, just remember that with some practice, you will be.

3. People just like have you done all kinds of great “stuff”

Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Bill Gates...what do they all have in common? They were once regular guys with a big dream and no experience to back it up, and despite the fact they came from humble beginnings, they created empires. Throughout history there were lots of people just like you going on to create major success. People achieve impossibilities all the time; it’s not crazy to think that you could do it too.

4. Focus on the process rather than the outcome

If we focus only on the things in our way -obstacles, challenges, setbacks- and we neglect getting started we will never be able to improve. When we focus too much on results we can blind ourselves to the daily opportunities for growth. On our way to achieving our goals we are going to hit obstacles, and if we focus on the obstacles and failures it can be discouraging, but when we choose to focus on the ways to improve, and pay attention to the ways in which we can become better, we set ourselves up for long term success.

5. It only matters if you think you are worthy

When it comes to feeling worthy, the only person’s opinion that matters is your own. Ultimately your self-image and your view of your capabilities is all that matters. Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you are going to be right. Focus on building up your own self-image, try positive affirmations, and try doing things that build up your self-image and self-confidence. Anything from getting into better shape, reading positive messages and watching positive movies, or even just talking with a few select friends that you trust can help you build a positive self-image and help you get past your feelings of unworthiness.

No one is going to judge you as harshly as you are going to judge yourself, so it is important to build a positive self-image that will support your feelings of confidence and worthiness. No one can and nothing can tear you down unless you allow it to happen, so refuse to view yourself negatively and instead build an inner world of confidence of self-love and respect. Then nothing else can stop you.

6. What others think of you doesn’t really matter

We tend to get caught up in what people think about us, and while the things that people say about us can hurt, it really shouldn’t determine our life either. Other people don’t know the potential hidden within you, they don’t know your dreams, passion, and dedication to your cause; other people can only see their interpretation of the work ahead of you, and most people hate to see others succeed, because it hurts them to see someone else make it. Do yourself a favor and let go of what people think about you and instead focus making yourself better each day.

7. What would the you from the future say to the you of today?

Imagine you do it, you go out there, accomplish your dreams, achieve wild success, and make a ton of money and gain financial freedom. What do you think the future you would say to the you that is reading this article right now? Do you think they would tell you to wait, or do you think they would tell you to get started right now? The future Steve Jobs or Bill Gates would have told their former selves the same thing “Get started, every second lost is a second that never comes back.”

8. If you really aren't worthy, then you have nothing to lose

If you truly think you aren’t good enough to do something, or if you feel that you truly aren’t worthy of an opportunity, then what do you have to lose? Think about it, if you don’t even think you can make it happen if you try, what is it going to hurt to give it your best shot? Not only would you sleep easier knowing that you gave it your best shot, but you will learn some lessons and grow in the process. There is nothing to lose from trying to do something, but you lose everything if you are too afraid to ever try.

The most important thing of all to remember when you don’t feel good enough, or when you don’t feel worthy of an opportunity is that you may not have all the skills that you need right this moment, but you can develop them over time. No one starts out adept at anything, but it is only through practice and dedication to something that you gain the skills you need to. Don’t delude yourself and tell yourself that you are good enough right now to do everything that you ever dreamed of, because the truth is, you aren’t. But, if you will put in the work, practice, and follow the path laid out by the greats that came before you, then you too can savor the sweet tastes of victory and success.
