Many people don’t like admitting their weaknesses. They do their best to show the people around them only their strong side. However, the fact is that everyone has a weakness. The ability to accept and deal with your weaknesses is very important for success in life. On the other hand, turning a blind eye on them can have very detrimental effects.
Here are some of the reasons why you should accept your weaknesses:
1. Knowing is Growing
You need to realize that it is impossible to grow in life if we don’t accept our weaknesses. Acknowledging your weaknesses does not mean accepting that you will always be in the same position for the rest of your life. The only way you can improve anything in your life is by being aware of what needs to be improved. You will never be able to change what you cannot accept. This is why most interviewers ask you to mention your weaknesses. They want to know the areas where you are not strong and the steps you are taking to improve.
2. Enables You to Look for Complementary Skills
No one can do everything. Accepting your weaknesses allows you to look for people who have complementary skills. Successful teams are made up of people who have diverse abilities. Where one team member is weak, there is someone else who can fill the gap. When you surround yourself with people who complement you, you are more likely to succeed in life.
3. Allows You to Have Compassion for Others
When you accept your weaknesses, you understand the pain of living with them. As a result, you are able to sympathize with the weaknesses of others. For instance, if you have had a tendency to be impatient, you will be able to empathize with someone else who has the same weakness. Similarly, if you have had the fear of speaking in public, you will be able to understand an employee that is hesitant to make a presentation. Therefore, accepting your own weaknesses can greatly improve your relationships with your employees, colleagues, friends and family.
4. Allows You to Choose The Right Relationships
Before entering into any business or romantic relationship with anyone, it is very important to come to terms with yourself. You need to accept your weaknesses and be open with your partner about them. Failing to do so will only create false expectations and could cause problems in a relationship. Being open about your weaknesses allows you to find a partner who accepts you as you as you are and is willing to help you grow.
5. Allows You to Avoid Compromising Situations
When you accept your weaknesses, you are better able to avoid situations which you cannot handle very well. For example, if you are a recovering alcoholic, you might not have the ability to control yourself in places where alcohol is freely available. Similarly, if you have a short temper, it would be advisable to avoid getting into arguments with your workmates.
It is very important to get real about our weaknesses without making excuses or justifying them. Accepting your weaknesses and addressing them can make you even stronger. Having weaknesses only makes us human.
