How to Age Proof your CV

Despite all the political correctness, age can often be a disadvantage when searching for jobs in a competitive job market. Mature candidates who boast many years of experience in the field can either be too qualified for a job vacancy, as well as have experience that is not familiar with the latest technology and software.

The following are a few tips on how to age-proof your CV and get the job you want:

Eliminate Experience

While experience is a necessary component of your CV, it is advised to leave out certain experiences that make them sound old and out of touch. It is highly recommended that leave out experiences that are 15-20 years age. For example: if you are applying for a job in 2012, only use job experiences from 1995 onwards. This way you provide a clear understanding of your career without employment gaps.

Leave out Education Dates

Since your educational qualifications are as important as your experience, it is advised to provide a clear overview, however you should leave out the dates. “Graduated in 1970” is a clear indication of your age therefore you should list your education, degrees and certificates without providing any dates – unless they are current of course!

Consider the Style of your CV

Individuals are able to tailor their CV according to the specific job they are applying for. Take a look at combination CVs (listing skills and experiences before employment) or a functional CV (accomplishments before experiences and employment). This will help you reduce chances of losing the recruiter’s attention in the first 20 seconds of scanning your CV.

Highlight your Suitability

A CV is the job seeker’s opportunity to demonstrate their suitability to the job they are applying for, therefore it is imperative to highlight specific skills and experience. The primary reason for highlighting particular aspects of your CV is to draw the attention of the recruiter to the relevant sections. As a mature job seeker, the main focus of the CV should be the skills and experiences – rather than the outdated education.

Include your Social Network

One of the most overlooked yet powerful tools that mature job seekers ignore is social networking. Include links to your social profiles, such as LinkedIn, Xing and Twitter in order to demonstrate that you are aware of the various online platforms in the twenty-first century. Make sure that you create social profiles and connect with professionals to further enhance your chances of finding a job.
