Google+ is a bit of an oddity compared to other social media platforms. It attempts to fill the gaps left by Facebook and Twitter, and it’s slowly but surely taking off. Since Google controls the largest search engine in the world, businesses and individuals have been forced to use this social network. The biggest brands have all decided to make the move over to Google Plus.

If you want to succeed, you need to make sure you don’t make many of the common mistakes people on this network make.

Public Posts

You would be surprised at just how many people fail to make their posts public. In Google’s language, this means giving them permission to index your posts. This increases the chances of your posts being discovered.

Link Dumping

Google Plus is designed for high-quality content. You need to add your own thoughts or people aren’t going to respond. There is a range of formatting options available for you to do this.

It doesn’t take much to avoid falling into the dumping trap. Ask a bold question of your audience or make a forthright statement when posting and you’ll catch people’s attention.

Thinking it’s Facebook

Google Plus isn’t Facebook and it isn’t Twitter. It’s entirely different. Successful tactics on these platforms won’t have the same effect on Google Plus. Every social network has a unique footprint. With Google Plus, the conventions have been slower to catch on.

You need to put more thought into each individual post. Google Plus loves additional content with detailed commentary and original thoughts. Instead of sharing an article about SEO best practices, complete your own introduction about what problems these best practices will solve.

Join a Community

One of the best ways to get started on this social network is to join a community. It’s necessary because it gives you access to a dedicated audience interested in the same things as you. Furthermore, there’s an audience for practically anything on Google Plus. If there’s a topic, you’ll find an audience. In the rare event you find nothing, try creating the community yourself.

Unlike Facebook and other platforms, Google Plus encourages you to engage with your audience directly. Communities facilitate this. You’re supposed to actively interest people, as opposed to relying on others to passively discover your content.

Is it Worth It?

Google Plus might take more time to manage than Twitter and Facebook, but you get more in return. The main advantage you get is the fact Google+ ranks success on here in its search engines as higher than any of the other social media networks. Going viral on Google+ is the best thing you can do on social media.

The key to success is to not treat it like a secondary network. Treat it as if it’s on the same level as Facebook and Twitter. Now is the time to take advantage of it. It still doesn’t have the huge audience you’ll find on other platforms, which means there’s less competition. Entrench your brand now and you’ll begin to reap the benefits quicker than you would on other networks!
