Are You Sabotaging Your Chances For a Job Promotion?

Most professionals harbor the ambition of climbing the corporate ladder. Having a higher position in a company comes with higher pay, greater responsibilities and greater influence. If you have been working in an organization long enough and your accomplishments stand out, there is a great chance that you could be promoted. However, there are some things which can sabotage your chances of promotion:

Not Applying

Everyone would love to earn a higher salary and have a better title. However, when the opportunity for a promotion opens up, many people lack the guts to send in their application. They might feel that they don’t have enough qualifications or experience to handle the responsibilities which come with the post. As a result, they end up remaining stuck in their current jobs. To avoid this, you need to begin preparing yourself for the promotion now. Take professional courses which will enhance your qualifications. Find ways of boosting your experience in your current job. This way, you will be ready for the opportunity when it arrives.

Being Negative

Many people who are looking for a higher position are not happy with their current positions. This could be due to a low salary, poor relations with colleagues, or dissatisfaction with the line of work. Whatever the reason, don’t make the mistake of talking negatively about your current position. When being interviewed for a promotion, you might be asked why you are interested in the position. Don’t use this as an opportunity to rant about your current job or boss. Instead, talk about what you are looking forward to in the new role.

Being Self-Centered

When pursuing a promotion, you are likely to look for ways of standing out from your co-workers. As a result, you might end up focusing on yourself too much and forgetting your colleagues. This could make you appear selfish and a poor team player, thus costing you the opportunity for a promotion. Therefore, as you work towards developing yourself, remember to support your team members as well.

Targeting The Wrong Job

When thinking about a promotion, some people only fantasize about the idea of getting a better salary or a prestigious title. They don’t take time to consider if they have what it takes to handle the new responsibilities which come with the promotion. As a result, they might end up applying for a promotion which does not fit them. Therefore, before applying for a promotion, take time to evaluate whether the position actually suits you.

Wrongly Taking Credit

In an attempt to enhance your chances for a promotion, you could decide to steal credit for a colleague’s work or report. However, if your ploy is discovered, you might not only lose the promotion but also your current job. If you are working with team on a task, you might be tempted to attribute the success of the team to your own efforts. However, failing to give credit to others will make you appear selfish and greedy.
