Israel’s healthcare system is continually in a process of transformation and development. Nursing is a very highly regarded profession and the country has a relatively high shortage of nurses in public hospitals, which is why the government is making continued efforts to encourage people to work in this sector. For example, the government is implementing a number of educational programs and has been perceived as being responsible for shaping the Israeli healthcare system and providing professional healthcare services to the population.

Professional nursing development in Israel

Israel is continually upgrading and expanding its scope of nursing practice, to ensure professional nursing development. Professional development is implemented to strengthen both the profession of nursing and the practice of the individual nurses who comprise the profession.

Becoming a nurse in Israel

In order to become a nurse in Israel it is important to acquire a license, as issued by the Nursing Division of the Ministry of Health (Misrad HaBriut). The process of acquiring a license involves:

  • Meeting the educational requirements in the Ministry of Health

  • Completing the Ministry of Health’s prerequisites for taking the licensure examination

  • Passing the licensure examination

Nursing programs in Israel involve both theoretical and clinical studies. In addition to meeting the educational requirements, the Ministry of Health requires that all candidates take a 98 hours preparatory internship. This internship contributes towards the process of acquiring the license.

In addition to the above, nurses are required to have a good working knowledge of Hebrew, as this is the official language and is also the language required to pass the examinations.

Finding work

Upon successful acquisition of the license and upon successfully passing the examinations, you will be free to begin the process of searching for employment as a nurse in Israel. Registered nurses are in high demand in Israel, thus the process of finding a job there can be relatively straightforward.

There are a number of methods that can be adopted in order to find employment, including directly contacting hospitals and health funds, as well as applying to the mental health services and Mother & Child clinics.
