Requirements for becoming a nurse
In order to become a nurse in Kenya you must meet the stipulated prerequisites that will enable you to enter into this profession. These include:
a) A basic diploma
This can be acquired within a period of 3 ½ years
b) An in-service basic diploma
This is in addition to the above diploma and takes 1 ½ years to complete
c) A Distant Education program
This is in place of option B above and takes two years to complete
In order to become enrolled on either of the above courses you will be required to have:
a) A KCSE minimum aggregate C plain in English, Kishwahili, Biology and Physical Sciences. A C- is also required in any one of the sciences and in Mathematics.
b) Any qualification considered equivalent in the KMTC Academic Board
c) Any Science degree obtained from a recognized university
Nurses can also upgrade their skills and knowledge by completing a Registered Community Health Nurses course, which takes a period of two years to complete.
Once the required courses have been complete and the qualifications have been obtained, nurses can begin their search for employment. There are numerous websites advertising nursing opportunities in Kenya and the turnover rate is extremely fluid, meaning that job opportunities there are rife.
