Becoming a Nurse in Mauritius

If you have decided that you would like to become a nurse in Mauritius then you will need to begin the necessary training in order to receive the required qualifications. If you wish to become a registered nurse you will need to commence training and obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). Generally speaking, it takes four years to complete the course and receive your qualification.

Alternatively many nurses in Mauritius begin with an Associate degree in nursing, which can be completed within two years. Other people choose to complete a diploma in nursing, which takes around three years to complete. Nevertheless with a BSN it is far easier to progress within your career and increase your salary over the years.

In order to become a licensed nurse you will need to take and pass the NCLEX exam, regardless of the previous academic routes you have taken. It is fundamental that this examination is passed as without passing, doctors do not give graduate nurses the opportunity to administer medications. It is therefore imperative that this step is successfully passed in order to fulfill your full duties as a nurse.

Once you have become a fully licensed and registered nurse you will be able to apply for a job vacancy within the relevant department of your training. Over time, the scope of your responsibilities will spread and your salary amount will increase.

In the first year of employment, an issued license is only valid for a period of one year therefore it will need to be renewed before expiration. Following the first renewal, you will need to renew it every two years, and it is important to maintain records of all of your achievements, licenses and certificates at all times.

There are numerous benefits to becoming in Mauritius, including a generous pay package, plenty of benefits to increase salary, excellent annual leave prospects and a decent pension plan. In addition, nurses are offered plenty of training opportunities, enabling them to renew and refresh their skills.
