Benefits of Blogging for Ecommerce Sites

Every online retailer would want to receive more visitors and leads on his site, and subsequently make more sales. One of the best ways of attracting more traffic to an ecommerce site is by blogging. The following are some of the benefits of running a blog.

1. Fresh content

Blogging allows you to create fresh content for your site on a consistent basis. When your site is regularly updated, it encourages your customers and prospects to keep visiting.

2. Search engine optimization (SEO)

Writing blog posts with appropriate keywords will enhance your search engine rankings. In turn, this will increase the chances of your web pages appearing in result pages when prospects search using similar keywords. Being more visible in search engines is likely to increase traffic to your ecommerce site. However, to sustain a high ranking, fresh blog posts should be published on a regular basis.

3. Authority

Blogging helps you to attain an expert status in your niche. By regularly posting information which is helpful to customers, you will eventually become recognized as an authority. Whenever someone has a question, they are likely to approach you for advice. Being perceived as an expert will build trust with your prospects, thus making it easier to market your products.

4. Lead generation

Besides attracting traffic, blogging can be a great source of generating leads for your ecommerce site. You could use your blog to build a mailing list comprising of your customers and prospects. Sending regular marketing messages via email can be a very effective way of converting visitors to buyers.

For a blog to be successful, it needs to have fresh content on a regular basis. However, many online store owners get frustrated when trying to think of what to write about. The following are some great strategies for generating content for a blog:

  • Check social networks

Social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest can be a great source of topic ideas. Find influential people in your industry and follow them. Read the content they share and observe which topics are most popular. This will give you an idea of what information your audience looking for.  

  • Ask your customers

A more direct approach is to ask your customers what exactly they would want to know about your products or industry. You could either send them an email or use survey tools like Survey Gizmo and Murvey to carry out an online survey.

  • Online forums

Industry-related forums can also be a great source of topic ideas for your blog. Visit several such forums and check the questions and answers that have been posted by forum participants.

  • Google

You can use search queries on Google to find out what people are searching for online. Here are some of the best queries to use when looking for topic ideas:

[your keyword] tutorial

Alternatively, you could use the Google Keyword Tool.

Though your blog can be a great marketing tool, avoid bombarding your audience with sale pitches. Pushing your marketing message too hard will only put off your readers. Instead, use your blog to offer useful information that will solve your customers’ problems. When they see your sincerity, they are more likely to be interested in your products.
