Benefits of Working for Estonia’s Government

Estonia, situated below Latvia in Central and Eastern Europe, has what is frequently described as a successful government. The government of Estonia, which is a Parliamentary Republic government, endorses a number of measures for employee’s working within Estonia’s government and social services system. The purpose of the system is to achieve a high rate of employment among the working age population.

Employees are able to benefit from:

  • Health Care

  • Social Care

  • Maternity benefits

  • Pension entitlements

Health care in Estonia works as follows:

Under the Health Insurance Fund, employees in Estonia are entitled to specialized medical care. All individuals insured under the Health Insurance Fund are entitled to a family practitioner, visits to a medical specialist, transportation by ambulance in the case of an emergency and up to ten days hospitalization. In addition, employees’ families are also covered under the act.

Social care in Estonia works as follows:

Under the Local Government Organization Act, employees are entitled to benefit from social assistance and a range of social services. Such entitlements can be received in the case of old age, inability to work, loss of the breadwinner and other reasons for state assistance. Families with many children are entitled to additional care and benefits.

Maternity Benefits

Under the Estonian Health Insurance Fund, all pregnant women are entitled to health insurance from the 12th week of pregnancy. In addition, she is entitled to free dental care during her pregnancy.

Pension entitlements in Estonia

The old age pension in Estonia consists of state old-age pension, funded pension and supplementary funded pension. In order to receive a state pension, an annual declaration must be submitted to the relevant administrative agency confirming his or her financial status.
