Brazilian Tourism Creates Jobs in the United States

16/05/2012 19:34 - Portal Brasil

Brazilian tourists are heating up the U.S. economy. For every 65 visas authorized in Brazil, one formal employment position is created in the country, according to the North American Embassy. From January to April this year, 400,148 Brazilians obtained visas to travel to the United States.

According to the Embassy's calculations 6,156 new jobs were created by Brazilian visitors. In 2011 a total of 945,000 visas were granted to Brazilians. This number created 14,538 formal jobs for North Americans.

If it depended on the interest of Brazilians to traverse the continent, that number would continue growing. Considering only the month of April a total of 103,511 new visas were processed. That number is 51% higher than the same period in 2011.

According to the Director-Superintendent of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham-Rio), Helio Blak, the entry of lower income groups into the consumer market coupled with the availability of credit has contributed to the growing interest from Brazilians in visiting the United States. "The increase in spending power of the population has influenced this process. There is a significant upward trend in visas for tourism. It is an expressive increase, and generates increased employment, especially in services".
