How to Build an Email Marketing List

When people visit your site, there is no guarantee that they will buy anything or even return later. Therefore, building an email list of your customers and prospects allows you to continue sending targeted marketing messages. Services such as mailchimp, activecampaign, aweber and campaigner offer great tools for running an email marketing campaign.

Here are some of the strategies that you can use to create an email marketing list.

1. Direct mail

Including a signup form in your catalogs, subscription renewals, directory ads or rebate cards can be a very effective strategy for getting customers and prospects to join your mailing list. When people submit their details using this traditional tactic, be sure to send them a confirmation email as soon as possible.

2. Add a sign-up form on your website

One of the most effective ways of building a list is to have a sign-up form on your website. Make it easy for visitors to find it by keeping your web design clean and uncluttered. In addition, make sure the form appears on the top part of your pages so that visitors don’t have to scroll down to find it. When designing your sign-up form, here are some things you need to consider:

  • Don’t ask subscribers for too much information. If the only information required is the first name and email address, then more people are likely to sign up
  • Include a brief description next to the sign-up form explaining the benefits of joining your mailing list. Your chances of success will be further enhanced if you offer an incentive for signing up. This could be a free eBook or a discount on a product
  • Some email marketing services allow you to split test your signup form. This means that you can create two variations of the form to establish which is most effective

3. Point of sale

When customers are ready to make a purchase, they are likely to be interested in getting information about special offers in future. Therefore, asking customers to submit their details during the checkout process can be a very effective strategy for building your mailing list. Find out if the shopping cart provider automatically allows the integration of a signup form. If this is not possible, then you might have to hire an expert to create this feature.

4. Use the comments section

If you have a blog, the comments section can be a major source of subscribers. Once someone has read your post, it is easy to get them to signup since they have already shown interest in your content. Most email marketing services come with plug-ins which allow the incorporation of opt-in features in the comments section.

5. Word of mouth

Face-to-face meetings also offer a great opportunity for building your email marketing list. Take time regularly to participate in live industry events and conferences. Remember to carry a sign-up sheet where people who are interested can submit their details.

Email marketing is a great way of creating a long-term and beneficial relationship with customers and prospects. However, this tool should be used responsibly. Guarantee your subscribers privacy and keep your end of the deal. Don’t use your mailing list for any other purpose other than what you have specified. Finally, make it easy for subscribers to opt-out of your list.
