Career Advancement: Promotion at Work

good news

Once you have begun your employment at a company, progress and career planning are two factors that will require careful deliberation. Individuals that wish to advance their career further in the field that they work in are advised to engage in the entire promotion process at work.

The Promotion

A promotion is an increase in rank and status in your current employment. Even if an individual is promoted from Marketing Executive to Senior Marketing Executive, an increase in salary and workload is to be expected. A promotion entails many benefits however, not everyone is entitled for a promotion as this specific corporate structure requires individuals to demonstrate exceptional productivity and progress in their field.

Not all individuals working in a professional environment are qualified and eligible for a promotion. It is often the case that the newest person within a company is able to obtain the promotion whilst their colleagues, having working there longer, are left wondering in regards to the increase in status. This is because some individuals become too comfortable in their role, not putting in enough effort and having a negative attitude at work. Together, these factors are able to negate any possibilities of a promotion.

Go Get It

If you feel that you are eligible for a possible promotion within your company, there are several things you can do in order to increase the chances of being considered a strong contender in your workplace. The first step would be to define and establish goals for yourself in regards to your career plan. Thinking strategically will allow individuals to be fully prepared when there is a potential opening higher up within the company.

In the event that an individual feels that they are eligible for a promotion based on their exceptional performance, they should assess themselves first. Before approaching your boss, you should try and understand your own strengths and abilities. By identifying key skills and capabilities, you will be able to demonstrate a strong and positive attitude towards your work.

Try and understand what the criterion for the promotion is, whether you qualify for it and how each of your abilities corresponds to the requirements for that role. By tailoring your skills to the job description, individuals can ensure that they are capable and eligible candidates for a specific position.

The Boss

After you have assessed yourself and ensured that you are a strong contender for a promotion, you should clearly communicate to your boss that you are ready to take your workload to the next level. It is important not to advertise yourself as it is your responsibility to inform the superiors; not demand a promotion, but request. After this step is complete, you boss will get back to you in abundant time with the response for your request.
