Careers with the Icelandic Police

Iceland does not have any form of military, that includes air force, army and navy. It does however have a vast police force, which act to secure public safety and reduce criminal activity on both land and sea.

The National Police in Iceland falls under the responsibilities of the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. There are 25 police districts, of which a variety of job opportunities is available to Icelandic citizens provided they meet the entry criteria.

Role of Icelandic Police:

  • Primary aim is to maintain law and order

  • Ensure the safety of the public at all times

  • Work to prevent and deter criminal activity

  • Carry out investigations

  • Assist the public

Characteristics required to become a police officer in Iceland:

  • Determination and resilience

  • Conscientiousness

  • Impartiality

  • Fairness

Training and Education

All new recruits to the Icelandic Police are required to have completed the relevant courses at the National Police College, which is an independent educational institution under the Minister of Justice.

To qualify for entry to the National Police College, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be between 20 and 35 years of age

  • Hold Icelandic citizenship

  • Have good mental health

  • Have good physical abilities

  • Possess proficiency in the Icelandic language

  • Have a valid driver’s license

  • Have no criminal record

  • Be an able swimmer

If applicants meet the above pre-requisites, they will then be eligible to take the entrance exam, which must be passed in order to obtain a place at the college.
