More than anything else, you NEED to find a career coach with a lot of experience. You need someone who has worked in your field or industry for years, and who has extensive experience facing all of the problems and questions you face as well. Their experience needs to be relevant for YOU and your career, not just overall work experience. The more successful they were in your industry or field, the better-suited they will be to offer you advice on how you can achieve success as well.
Is the career coach easy to work with? When working with someone as closely as you will be with a career coach, it needs to be someone you can get along with. If they have an abrasive or challenging personality, how do you think you’re going to be able to work with them? It’s all about finding someone with whom you feel comfortable, as well as someone that you feel you can trust. Personality does play a huge role in the success of your relationship with the career coach.
This is an important one to consider. Your career coach is going to help you solve problems at work and make the right career choices, but how often can you consult them for help? If they are only available a few hours per week or month, are they really the right coach for you? Wouldn’t you prefer someone who was more available?

If you want to get an understanding of how a career coach operates and their approach to their job, take a look at their website. You’ll usually find a mission statement or at least an "About Me" section which will give you an insight into the way they handle their clients (you).
