How to Decide When to Have a Baby Without Harming Your Career

Having a baby is most certainly one of the greatest gifts in life. However, the choice to have a baby isn’t always the easiest. Besides financial concerns, many women are focused on their career. If you have worked hard to become highly successful, it can be challenging to give it up.

Although many go back to work after having a baby, a lot can change. If you have been progressively improving and achieving, this will decline once you decide to have a child. Before you focus on motherhood, you need to assess your career. How will this affect your future? You not only need to be conscious of you and your partner’s future, as you’re now planning to bring a child into the world.

Survey Results

The United States Census Bureau, currently shows that the national average for a mother’s first birth is age 25. In comparison to the past, women are waiting longer to have their first child. This is based off of a number of factors, including the role of women in the workplace.

In 2006, it was found that 1 out of 12 births, were from women aged 35 or older. Women that were 35 or older, counted for only 1 out of 100 first births in 1970. It is believed that 20% of women, now wait to have their first child after the age of 35.

TheBump.com and ForbesWomen, teamed up to conduct an interesting survey. This survey included 2,210 women, regarding the right time to have their first child. It was found that 42% said that the ideal time to become a mom, while maintaining their career, is between the age of 25-29. It was reported that individuals have generally established a career at this age, increasing financial stability. They’re also still youthful, which is ideal for pregnancy.

When Is the Best Time to Have a Baby Without Hurting Your Career?

The right time to have a baby is whenever you are personally ready. Do you have your finances in order? Can you provide your baby with the security and resources he/she needs? Women also have varied careers, so it’s hard to generalize.

It’s important to establish yourself within your career before you decide to have a baby. This will allow you to build a strong network, so that you can stay in-touch. This network will come in handy in the future, especially if you’re planning to re-enter the workforce.

Although there’s no perfect time for all women, there are ways to have a baby without harming your career. If you believe that you’re financially stable and ready to have a baby, then you can plan ahead. This will allow you to have a beautiful baby, while you plan for your future. Your career does not need to suffer, as long as you plan ahead.

  1. Look Into Maternity Options: It’s essential that you know your company’s maternity leave policies. If you have been at your company for an extended period of time, then you may be eligible for paid leave. This will allow you to get paid, while you spend time with your baby. If you have a difficult pregnancy, there are also options in terms of disability. When you plan ahead, you will be better off.
  2. Growing Child-Care: It is becoming more and more common to take advantage of childcare. Before you have your baby, you should already be looking into daycare options. There are many daycare centers that have a waiting list, so be conscious of this. If you plan ahead, you can go back to work after your maternity leave. As long as you keep in touch, you can more than likely pick up where you left off. There are also many in-home daycare options that are cheaper, yet provide excellent care. This is also a great way to jumpstart your child’s social skills.
  3. Work From Home: The options available continue to grow, as more and more moms are working from home. Companies now offer various telecommuting positions, which allow moms to raise their children, while maintaining their career. If you’d like to have a baby, speak with your boss and the IT department to see what options are available.
  4. On-Site Daycare: Many top companies are now offering the perfect solution for new mothers. On-site daycares are being incorporated into offices, so that parents can work while their children are nearby. This is especially ideal if you’re breastfeeding.

If you’d like to have a baby and you’re ready, then the time to have a baby is now. In terms of your career, it will be up to you to plan ahead. Planning will provide you with more options regarding your career and motherhood. As long as you effectively plan for your future, you can enjoy both worlds. You can experience motherhood, while maintaining a successful career. There’s more options than ever, so you no longer need to pick one over the other.
