Do You Start Your Day Off With Something Sweet Too?

It seems that many people have taken heed of the fact that skipping breakfast has a direct impact on one’s level of productivity in the workplace. However, for a large proportion of the UK population, they have gone from skipping breakfast altogether, to kick starting their day with something sweet; not quite the effect that healthcare professionals are aiming for I am sure!

A report titled Population Health Management revealed that those who didn’t eat a healthy breakfast were at a risk of experiencing decreased productivity by as much as 66%. When this figure is then compared to the staggering £300 million that is costs the British economy each year due to workers skipping breakfast, it soon becomes evident that a healthy and hearty breakfast is vital.

According to research from Weetabix as published by the Daily Mail, 59% of workers in the UK admit to skipping breakfast altogether, which ultimately decreases their levels of productivity and concentration in the workplace. Why are so many skipping breakfast? Reports show that Brits are simply ‘too rushed’ to make time to eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast in the morning, and it is those based in London that are the worst culprits!

Could this be the reason why many are taking to eating sweet foods before clocking into the office?

New research shows that 43% of children are eating sugar-laden snacks first thing in the morning, and cereals are the most common choice amongst rushed workers. Further to this, 20% of adults surveyed admit to eating pastries and chocolate bars as their version of breakfast. The study, which included information from 2,000 participants found that a quarter of those surveyed had little clue as to what carbohydrates were and which carbs were good/bad for them. This lack of basic knowledge on healthy eating is worrisome and needs to be addressed, fast.

The ‘I’m too rushed in the morning to make a healthy breakfast’ excuse is getting old. Putting in a slice of wholemeal toast or popping a bowl of porridge in the microwave for two minutes won’t affect your busy schedule but it will absolutely increase your productivity levels, alertness throughout the day and general energy levels.

What’s more, we must be extra careful to teach our children the importance of a balanced diet and exercise, and to inform them of the benefits of a healthy breakfast in the morning.

Arthritistoday.org states that “skipping breakfast can lead to an increase in LDL levels” – this is also known as the bad type of cholesterol which in turn can affect your ‘bran-energy’ and long term health. It can also heighten your risk of developing diabetes. This is testament to the fact that eating breakfast can have a significant effect on your life.

There is also the risk of putting on unwanted weight. Too much sugar consumption can actually make you feel less full and so you automatically eat more sugar filled snacks to satisfy your cravings; the next thing you know, you have put on 10 pounds and your trousers no longer fit you!

Prevention.com provides some excellent tips on avoiding sugary snacks. Some more tips are listed below…

  • Swap your soft drinks with fresh fruit juices or water
  • Switch your dairy filled chocolate bars with rich, high quality dark chocolate.
  • Avoid sweet tasting cereals and instead opt for cereals such as Weetabix or porridge and add honey for natural sweetness.
  • Eat eggs in the morning. These are high in protein and will also stop you snacking midday!

 

Whether you skip breakfast altogether or you reach for a chocolate croissant in the morning, you are doing your health, productivity and general well-being a world of harm. You need to take care of your body by healthy eating so that your mind works to its full capacity and you are not at risk of being unproductive at work!
