How to Dress for a Job Interview

If you have been offered a job interview one of the first factors to bear in mind is what you are going to wear. This is because it is paramount that you dress your best for the interview, as the way that you present yourself says a lot about how you market yourself.

It is also important to make a good first impression as this will impact upon your interviewer’s attitude towards you.

When planning what to wear for an interview you must first consider the type of company that you are interviewing for. If you are entering a conservative business environment then it is crucial to remember that appearances do count. Nevertheless regardless of the type of environment you are interviewing in, appearances are still important and you should always endeavor to dress your best.

First steps

One of the first things that you can do upon being offered an interview is to research a little more about the company. Does it have a formal, corporate feel to it or is the environment more laid back? There is no harm in asking the individual who invited you for an interview, or having a look on the company website to see if there are any office-based/on-site images.

Appearances matter

When planning your outfit it is always better to err on the cautious. Opt for more formal over less, in order to avoid embarrassment upon arrival at the interview. By dressing smarter than the daily dress code, you will only work towards impressing the recruiters and giving off a positive first impression.

Women:

Wear solid suit colors with a coordinated shirt or top, or a formal dress with a corresponding jacket. Alternatively you could opt for a tailored pencil skirt with a shirt and formal jacket.

Incorporate some jewelry into your outfit to give it a unique twist. Ensure that your hair is clean and professionally styled. Above all, make sure that you are comfortable as you do not want to be fidgeting throughout the interview. Prepare your nails so that they are well groomed in a neutral color. Keep make up neutral and understated.

Men:

Wear a professional and well fitted suit in a solid color. Match with a smart, well-ironed shirt and professional cufflinks. Pair your outfit with a smart belt and always match your shoes and socks with your belt. Ensure that your shoes are clean and well presentable.

Keep your hair neat and tidy and shave before your interview. Trim your nails and do not overpower your interviewers with a potent aftershave.
