Europe’s Top 10 Cheapest Cities for Travellers – 2015

Planning to take a year off to travel around Europe? Price of Travel is a website that publishes an annual “Backpacker Index” and other useful tools to enable travellers to make comparisons of the cost of important variables in different cities around the world. Its recently published European Backpacker Index ranks 56 major European cities by price, covering “virtually every corner in Europe” for 2015, shown below. The ranking is good news if your currency is the US Dollar, as every currency has fallen against it; the Euro fell 15 percent against the Dollar.

How the index is calculated

The Index is based on the daily cost of  “good” accommodation (one night for a cheap bed in the least expensive hostel), public transport (two rides), three cheap meals, the average cost of a cultural attraction, and an “entertainment fund” to allow for the cost of three cheap beers “or wine” for each day in each city. (The Index suggests that teetotallers could opt for coffee and a dessert or attend a local music concert instead). Click on the links for each city to be taken to a more detailed breakdown of costs and recommendations such as where to stay, in addition to general information such as the weather in each city.

The Index is now in its fifth year, and is an invaluable resource for travellers seeking to make travel choices that will suit their budget. If you have a bit more money to spend, an alternative index is the Europe 3-Star Traveler Index, which allocates a higher allowance for food, includes taxi rides for transport and uses 3-star, centrally located accommodation to compile its rankings.
