Get a Job With the City of Vancouver

The City of Vancouver is recognized as one of the BC’s Top Employers, according to the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers, and is also regarded for being one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers. This recognition is one of the main reasons why job seekers wish to work for the City of Vancouver.

There are currently around 9,000 employees working for the City of Vancouver, who benefit from excellent working conditions, competitive rates of pay, quality of service, enhanced well-being of the community and a safe and healthy workplace.

To work for the City of Vancouver, you can begin the application process online, in person, or via letter application.

It is important to know the type of city job you wish to apply for, as there are four main categories:

  1. CUPE – administrative, maintenance and technical jobs

  2. CUPE 1004 – laborers, gardeners, machinery operators

  3. Exempt (non-union) – Human resources, managers, engineers

  4. Temporary Exempt (non-union) – system analysts, engineers, human resources

Why work for the City of Vancouver…

Depending on the position you hold with the City of Vancouver, you will enjoy a wide range of employee benefits. Some of the main advantages are listed below:

Earned Days Off (EDO) – employees can work an extra 30 minutes each day and receive an additional 15 days leave per year.

Paid vacation time – city workers enjoy a minimum of 15 days paid leave each year, however, the longer you work for the city, the more paid leave you will receive. The maximum number of days leave is 30.

Health and welfare benefits – this extends to medical services plan, extended health coverage, dental coverage, life insurance, sick leave and gratuity plans.

Employee savings plan - this is a scheme whereby a percentage of the employee’s salary is deducted and paid into a savings fund, then deposited back to the employees name.

Pension plan – one of the most favored benefits is the pension plan which provides a monthly pension when the employee reaches retirement age.
