Being content or happy is something many people want, but they don’t know how to achieve it. Life can be unpredictable and frustrating at times, and if you have a lot on your plate or if you’re dealing with a lot of stress, it can be hard to find your happy place. Just know that contentment isn’t a far-off dream. There are ways to feel better, and it starts with adjusting your mindset.

1. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
If you sit around and compare yourself to other people, you may never be happy and content. You may see your friends accomplishing a lot, such as buying houses, having families or getting nice jobs. You may wonder why these good things don’t happen to you. However, we acquire things at different stages, and some of your peers will have more than you. Stop worrying about others and only worry about yourself. Don’t feel inferior just because you don’t have what another person has.
2. Be Thankful for What You Have
You may not have the biggest house, the nicest car or the highest paying job, but there are undoubtedly plenty of positive things happening in your life. Some of us have a terrible habit of magnifying what’s going wrong in our lives, and we give little attention to the good things.
Practice being grateful for what you have and it’ll be easier to feel happy and content. For example, you might have better health than most of your peers or you may have a support system that others envy.
3. Realize Money and Things Don't Make Us Happy
Money might make life a lot easier and it can alleviate financial stress, but it doesn’t guarantee happiness. I don’t know about you, but over the years I’ve met many well-off, unhappy people. I’ve even known people to give up high paying stressful jobs and find happiness in lower paying occupations.
4. Know That Happiness is a Choice
Understandably, some people battle depression or anxiety, and for them, happiness isn’t a choice. But if you’re feeling down because you’re drowning in self-pity or focusing too much on what could have been, you’re robbing yourself of happiness.
We all have days when we’re feeling sad, but you have power to change your mindset. This starts with replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Becoming happier might also require limiting contact with negative people in your life. If you’re surrounded by people who complain about their lives, this attitude can rub off on you and you might start looking down on your own life.
5. Live in the Moment
It’s also difficult to be happy and content when you’re always worrying about the past or the future. You can’t change the past, and you can’t predict tomorrow. Learn how to live in the moment and stop worrying about yesterday’s mistakes and tomorrow’s problems.
Learning to be content and happy with your life is a challenge, but it’s a challenge you can win. What steps have you taken to be a happier, more content person?
