How to Get Noticed as a New Graduate

Graduate employees must do everything they can in order to get noticed by the right people in a company. As a graduate, it is you who will be under review, you who has to prove themselves worthy of their job, you who needs to gain approval from everyone working around you. To be brutally honest, succeeding in your career as a fresh graduate can take longer than you hoped or expected, but with the right attitude and strategy, you can propel yourself to the forefront of the top candidates list and have your pick of the best employers.

Here are some useful tips on how to kick start your career as a graduate and get noticed by the best!

Start off in a small company

One of the most important things graduates must obtain in order to progress is experience. Without experience of handling important tasks, dealing with clients and have a central role in a business, you will have no foundation in which to progress.

Working in a small company will not only give you the opportunity to handle large responsibilities within a short time frame, but it will help you to progress up the management ladder quickly. Compared with some of the big multinational organizations who employ a 2-year graduate scheme, working for a SME could be the career break you need to get noticed!

With a small company, you can also learn about how the business operates, how new projects are built and implemented and how key markets are targeted. Working in a large company, you will usually specialize within a specific departmental area, giving you little chance of learning how businesses operate as a whole.

If you don’t ask you don’t get

When beginning your career within a large or small business, you must be proactive and learn new skills, develop new understandings of things, and take on more responsibilities as and when you are capable of handling them.

If you feel that you want to learn about another side of the organization, or that you can take on a bigger workload, or even that you want to progress to a higher role whereby you manage a team, it is important that you voice your ambitions to the relevant person. Provided you can back up the reason why you feel you deserve more responsibility or a higher position, it is likely that you will be given the chance to progress when the time is right for the company.

Work your way to the top

Don’t be fixated on getting your dream job with a top employer straight away. As a new graduate, you must acknowledge that experience, skills and hard work are valued by employers. Graduates should accept positions with small firms, or companies that may not necessarily interest them in the long term, in order to learn important ‘tricks of the trade’ and other relevant skills to create a solid foundation for their career progression.

You will soon find that your CV stands out amongst the rest, and top recruiters become eager to interview you. Patience is often key in situations like this.
