Guidelines for Successful Guest Blogging

Guest blogging is one of the most effective ways of promoting your business or brand. It involves creating content for other blogs in your niche. The main aim of guest blogging is to get more exposure for your brand, attract more traffic to your own blog, establish yourself as an expert in your industry and build a community for your blog. This is a win-win situation where blog owner gets quality and original content without having to pay for it.

Here are some great tips for successful guest posting:

Identify your target blogs

Your guest posts should be targeted at blogs which are related to your niche. For instance, if your blog is focused on nutrition, you can target fitness or lifestyle blogs. In addition, you need to focus on blogs which have a substantial readership, which is evidenced in comments as well as social media likes, tweets and shares. Finally, the blog should be owned by someone who is a recognized expert in the field. You can search for such blogs that accept guest posts using keywords such as ‘submit guest post’, ‘guest post guidelines’, ‘guest blogging’ or ‘accepting guest posts’.

Brainstorm a topic

Think of topics which will help you achieve your objective for guest posting; enhancing your credibility, building your brand, attracting readers and driving traffic to your blog. You can get ideas for articles by visiting other related to see what other bloggers are writing about. Alternatively, check out Q & A sites such as Answers.com and Yahoo Answers to see the kind of questions people usually ask. You could also come up with topics based on current industry news or questions you normally hear from customers.

Follow the instructions

All blogs which accept guest posts have specific instructions for submission. This could be instructions regarding the acceptable topics, the length and format of the post, the citation of sources and the images required. Some even provide a specific email address for submission, as well as the number of days it will take to get a response. Read the instructions thoroughly and tailor your submission accordingly.

Here are some guidelines for pitching your topics:

  • Address the blogger by their first name. Merely saying ‘Hi’ or ‘Dear blogger’ will make your email sound impersonal
  • First, introduce yourself. Mention your blog and talk about your experience in freelance writing. You could even provide links to samples of your work
  • Mention how you found the blog and why you are interested in being a contributor
  • Briefly discuss the topic you want to write about. Explain how the readers of the blog will benefit from it
  • Conclude your pitch with a call to action such as ‘Let me know if you are interested in this topic’

If the blog owner responds in the affirmative, you can then go on to write the guest post. Remember to include a short bio at the end of the post with a link to your own blog.

Once your guest post gets published, take time to promote it on all your social media profiles. Take time to respond to any comments or questions left by readers. This will enable you to build strong relationships and attract more followers to your brand.
