Hidden Google+ Features You Need To Know About

google plus

Google+ is a crucial online platform for Social Media Optimization (SMO). How you integrate the social site with your brand can affect conversion rates, and overall traffic.

Despite the straightforward interface, there might be some things you’ve missed out on when it comes to utilizing the true power of Google+. In the SEO world, we know Google to be highly detailed when it comes to the release of search engine algorithm updates. Therefore, it’s no surprise that their very own social media platform also has a handful of unique functions and capabilities.

Edit Photos Directly From Google+

An effective SMO strategy makes use of vibrant photos that pair well with catchy captions. In order to stay ahead of their competition, Google added a function that allows users to edit photos either before or after posting. It is important to take note that the online editor is only available for Chrome users.

The built-in app includes your basic editing functions such as resize, contrast and brightness. There are also a number of filters for those who want to add a personalized touch to their photos. This add-on is the perfect solution for individuals who don’t have time to tinker with expert editing software, but want to showcase the best aspects of their pictures.

The Ripple Effect

Tired of reading spreadsheets and graphs? Google recently added a feature that allows you to see how your content is being viewed called Google+ Ripples. As you might suspect, the visually-appealing chart plots likes and shares in the form of circles and ripples.

Below the chart, you’re able to access key information related to where your content is going, average chain length, shares per hour and languages of public shares. To access Google+ Ripples, simply open the options tab found in the top-right corner of your post, and click on “View Ripples”.

Google+ Extensions

If you’re a Chrome-user, you’re probably used to working with a lot of extensions. Google+ has its own extension called Helper. It allows users to do the following:

  • Bookmark Google+ posts with ease
  • Have notifications delivered directly to your desktop
  • Share Google+ content quickly to other popular social media sites
  • Like posts instantly

This powerful extension can be downloaded through Google Web Store. Setup and customization is a breeze, just like other user-friendly Google products.

Disable Auto-Emails

Not many people are fond of receiving random emails, even if it’s from someone that they’re connected with on Google+. Unfortunately, (by default) everyone’s Google+ account is set to do just that. With a few clicks, people you’re connected with, who you may not directly know, can send you an email instantly. This feature comes with an off button, but not inside Google+, making it difficult for people to access.

The switch for this function is located in Gmail under “settings”. From the “settings” tab, you’re able to control who can email you from Google+. Don’t forget to hit save before closing the tab.

Google+ Reports

Is your Google+ profile fully optimized? Unlike Facebook, which comes with its own reports, Google+ is yet to provide key data about optimization, performance and linking strategies. For this information, you need to go to a website called Steady Demand. To get your own free Google+ report, enter your URL and click on the “test” icon. Within minutes, you can see the strengths and weaknesses of your profile. This free tool is essential for those who are serious about online branding and SEO.

To conclude, Google has been actively expanding its capabilities in the social media industry to cater to the needs of today’s online marketing strategies. Are these features enough to overthrow top social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter? What other features would you like to see in future?
