How to Get a Job as a Tax Inspector in the UK

Individuals who wish to work for the United Kingdom government are free to apply for the position of a tax inspector. This role is within the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and primarily involves detecting and investigating tax evasion, ensuring that individuals and companies are paying the correct tax rate and represent the HMRC at appeal tribunals. As a tax inspector in the UK, you are liable to provide nationals, citizens and other individuals with accurate information and advice with regards to their tax rate and other issues related to taxation.

Tax inspectors are required to take the Tax Professional Development Programme that is run by the HM Revenue and Customers graduate programmes. There is high competition for this program therefore individuals must past all three stages before they are qualified to take on the role of a tax inspector. Other requirements include a minimum of 2:1 honors in a any subject of choice.

Individuals starting as tax inspectors will have annual salary of £29, 256 in London after completing the Tax Professional Development Programme. Once the tax inspectors have completed the initial 4 year course, they are eligible for a higher salary bracket of £46, 983, with those located in London being paid £52, 669.

As a tax inspector, you will be required to work long hours, often including travelling to different districts during the time of the course. All workers are entitled to flexible working hours, with other benefits such as maternity, adoption and paternity leave. The position is a full time job therefore it is not possible to take on this role as a freelancer or self-employed individual.

Once you have completed the Tax Professional Development Programme, it is possible to take on various roles within the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) such as tax work for other sector or becoming a stamp duty officer. There is room for promotion such as taking on management role within the department; however you must show competence and abilities to be successful.
