How to Manage your Team

Individuals who are hired for a managerial position or promoted into a higher role in their current job are often faced with the challenge of managing their team effectively. It is imperative that you understand the scope of your role as a manager and implement a strong structure to ensure smooth operations within your department.

By balancing your work and personal life, employees are able to reduce stress, increase productivity and essentially obtain job satisfaction. The following are some tips on how to find the balance:


A number of managers fail to fulfill their duties due to lack of delegation. It is impossible to complete all tasks by yourself therefore it is important to distribute the workload amongst the team. This ensures that all individuals are competent enough to complete tasks and meet deadlines, and that you have enough time to complete your individual and team responsibilities.

Identify the strengths of the people in your team and match them with the tasks that need to be completed. This helps you establish communication with all team members and ensure that each individual is aware of their responsibilities.


Managers often face the challenge of motivating their team members in an effective manner, without imposing their power and authority. By understanding the dynamics of your team, you can ensure that your use the correct approach. The majority of managers experience a stressed out and under motivated team in times of high workload, therefore it is advised to motivate your team with incentives and positive thinking.

Even the presence of one unmotivated and negative individual can bring down the entire morale of the team, thus resulting in a decrease in productivity. In times like this, providing the team with the opportunity for an employee review or appraisal often helps as the employee is able to communicate their concerns and receive feedback.


Effective communication is the key skill of a good manager; however effective communication and active listening are the signs of an exceptionally skilled manager. The majority of managers over absorb themselves in the power aspect of their role, failing to recognize the accomplishments and successes of individual team members.

By effectively communicating, managers can be tuned in with the productivity of their team members. To further sharpen their managerial skills, managers should actively listen to their team members for their ideas, suggestions and achievements. This will help to boost your teams morale and be more productive.

Understand your Role

Many managers fail to scrutinize their own position as they are preoccupied with managing their team and their own responsibilities. As a manager you are an individual that other team members look up to for guidance, therefore it is advised that you establish a bond with your team members. By making use of effective communication strategies, managers are able to identify the teams’ goals and expectations – making sure that no team member is left out or unsure about their workload.

As a leader there are certain expectations that surround a managerial role. Some of these expectations include exerting power without being overpowering, establishing a bond with team members without overstepping their role and guiding their team without spoon feeding individuals.
