The weekend is over and here comes your favourite day, Monday! Like most of people, you hate the first day of the week with a passion. I mean ok, it is only natural that you are just not in the mood to do work every now and then, but what can you do when you are feeling overwhelmed more often that you should? How could this affect your work?
There are many reasons why you may be unhappy at work. But this may have nothing to do with the job in itself. It may even be entirely your fault. When it comes down to being unhappy at work, Margie Warrell, contributor on Forbes, says you have three options:
- Change what you do – this means getting a new job or making a career change.
- Change how you do it – which relates to adopting a new mindset and work habits.
- Change nothing – which implies that you stay in your current job and still be miserable.
Now to help you understand what she means, let’s take a look at the things you may be doing wrong that could be making you feel miserable at work:
#1 You Focus on The Negatives
If you are counting the hours left until you leave the office, there is no doubt that you will be miserable. Complaining and stressing out about the job is a big no-no as this affects your mood and has serious consequences on your performance. In fact, these two might even be the two most self-destructive ways to work. To help you out, help yourself appreciate what you have and live in the moment. Take a second and look at your blessings and think happy thoughts. Stressing out about what you can’t change will only make it worse.
#2 You Want The Dream Job
You might not know this yet, but there is no such thing as a perfect job. In any role, you are in, there are going to be some tasks that you don’t like doing. For example, you might hate routine, so you hate auditing, which is perfectly understandable; but searching for the dream job which may not even exist, is making you even more dissatisfied with your situation. Look at it this way; you may be trying too much.
#3 You Are in The Wrong Job
Perhaps being unhappy at work is no one else’s fault but your own. You have convinced yourself that you have clearly made the wrong choice and now you feel trapped in a job that gives you nothing but stress and dissatisfaction. Well, if that’s the case, clearly taking the first option Warrell suggests, is the best course of action. But, if you want to make that last try, it’s never too late to reconsider. Think about what you could be learning in your job if you just chose to be more enthusiastic about it every morning.
#4 You Want to be Perfect
News flash; you are never going to be perfect and that is the harsh reality of life. No matter how many spreadsheets you fill in this won’t make you a better employee – well at least not overnight. Being too much of a perfectionist is problematic not only because you expect too much of yourself, but also because you are prone to becoming disappointed more often than usual. When that happens, it makes sense you will find yourself weeping in the corner.
#5 You Let Life Get in The Way
If you are miserable at work it might mean that you are also miserable outside work. In fact, when that’s the case, it becomes more difficult for you to focus on doing your job. But that is why achieving a work-life balance is important. You don’t want your job to mess up your life and vice versa. Just relax, bring your cool and everything is going to work out fine.
It’s important to realise if you make yourself miserable. Have you ever heard ‘there is no way to happiness, [but] happiness is the way’? Well, Buddha must have known something when he first said it. So take in this great piece of advice and make your days at work happy, enjoyable and productive. The power is in your hands, so learn how to love your job and it is guaranteed you will no longer complain about Monday or any other day of the week.
