Is Your Job Bullsh*t?

Bullshitjob.com is a tongue-in-cheek site, inspired by the movie Office Space, which provides an anonymous platform for people who consider their jobs to be utter bullshit! Essentially, it’s just an opportunity to have a rant about any maltreatment, mishaps or oddities in the workplace. You’ll have a sympathetic ear at this site, or at the very least, can read about someone who has it worse off than you.

The posts are divided into BS categories, such as ‘Boss’, ‘Customers’ and ‘Paperwork’. To give you a little taster, one poor soul submitted a post entitled ‘Worst Desk Location Ever’ in the ‘New Guy’ section, pictures included. I really feel for this person, as we’ve all been the newbie at some time or another. The anonymous poster took a job as ‘Senior Software Consultant’ at a start-up company, only to be met with uninterested, over-worked staff who wouldn’t give him the time of day. The way he did inadvertently gain some attention though, was with the makeshift roller desk they set up for him in the middle of the corridor of all places! This resulted in a lot of sideways glances and jokes at his expense, and what’s more he was placed in an ideal location between two cubes, those of his manager and his manager’s manager…

Not only does the site have BS stories, there are also great tools for the bullshitter in all of us. One great feature is the job title generator, allowing you to create a random but very real sounding job title in milliseconds. In just a few clicks I came up with, ‘Customer Usability Consultant’,’ Regional Interactions Officer’ and ‘District Configuration Representative’. This is quite useful for Billy Bullshitters actually in that they’ll never have to come up with a new title for staff by themselves again!

Another unique feature is the ‘Is Your Job Bullshit?’ quiz. Many of us probably believe that this is the case, but never before have we had a system to measure the bull-factor by. Questions include:

Have clipped-out Dilbert comics nearby?

Work in a cube?

Do you have “soft skills”?

Are you overpaid?

Hilarious! The results range from ‘one of the disgruntled masses’ to ‘Bullshit artist’ and at the top of the scale, ‘A real straight shooter with upper-management written all over you.’ Think your job’s a pile of rubbish? Find out!

At the moment, the site is holding a bullshit mission statement competition and looking for submissions. Send in yours and see how it fairs against others. Maybe your job/company isn’t has bad as you thought? It would be a bit bitter-sweet if you win though…
