Joining the Portugal Police Force

Individuals who are interested in working within the public service sector, and whom seek a challenging yet rewarding career serving the community, should apply for a career with the Portugal Police.

Structure of the Portugal Police Service

The Ministry of Justice is responsible for Judiciary Police tasks including criminal investigation for complex and serious crimes. The ministry of Interior is responsible for Public Security Police, the Special Civilian Police, and the National Republican Guard, which covers the scope of civilian metropolitan integrated police and military forces.

There are many different career paths to follow under the remit of the Portugal Police Service. For example, there are various national police organizations, a coast guard, and a border control service.

Training is taken very seriously with the Portugal Police and there are 4 main areas of teaching that must be followed by each applicant and police employee. This includes initial training to the police force, promotion courses, specialization courses and continuous training courses to improve police officers’ skills.

Applicants need to attend the official training academy in order to qualify for a job with the police. There are four main police training centers in Portugal:

  • School of the National Republican Guard

  • Escola de Polícia Judiciária (practical school of criminal sciences)

  • Istituto Superior de Ciencias Policias e Seguranca Interna Superior Institute of Police Sciences and Internal Security)

  • Escola Prática da Polícia de Segurança Pública (police training school)

Candidates who qualify for police training will experience a broad range of subjects to study, some of which include:

  • Police Law

  • Police Tactical Operations

  • Crime Prevention

  • Public Policy and Security

  • Criminal Law and Procedures

  • Criminal investigation

  • Judicial Sciences

  • Mathematics

  • Foreign Languages
