How to Make a Good First Impression on a Video Job Interview

So you have probably learned everything you need to know about the typical job interview that usually requires you to visit the company and meet the big team. But what happens when your initial contact with recruiters is taking place online? How can you prepare yourself to ensure you will make a good first impression on a video job interview?

While the video job interview is fundamentally different from a face-to-face job interview, they share a lot of similarities in the way employers are choosing to conduct the session. So as far as the questions recruiters ask is concerned, the two types of interviews don’t differ much. From the candidate’s point of view, however, there are a lot of things that need to be considered prior to the video interview, provided you want to look good to the eyes of employers.

So, here are some tips to help you make a good first impression while video interviewing:

#1 Make a strong introduction

When the video interviewing begins, make sure you introduce yourself regardless if the recruiter doesn’t ask the usual question “Tell me about yourself”. This is vital when you are using the video because it helps recruiters learn more about you when they can’t actually see you or clearly “read your moves” and body language.

So, ensure that you prepare a strong introduction where you refer to background information such as education, work history, and key skills you possess. Depending on the role you have to decide what elements are most likely to be relevant to the job you are applying and what recruiters really want to hear. This will definitely impress employers since it will show you have taken the initiative to introduce yourself and explain the situation before they could take the lead.

#2 Demonstrate your energy and passion

Videos can’t transmit the same enthusiasm that would normally be evident during a real interview. Most recruiters are aware of that, and that’s the reason they choose to video interview with candidates. They want to know how you will be able to demonstrate your energy and motivation through the video. This means that you should come up with alternative ways to communicate your drive and your passion for the job. If you communicate these qualities effectively, the video will help you showcase your strongest selling points that cannot be included in your CV. Also, it might help if you think about why you are applying for the job in the first place and what you want to get out of this job.

#3 Get Creative

With a video interview you can get more creative in regards to showcasing your own work. Since you can’t hand over written information to the employers you could ask them if they would like you to show them your online portfolio or go through your blog while sharing your Skype or ooVoo screen. This would definitely help you stand out from your competition and help recruiters remember you at the end of the day!

#4 Be positive and smile!

Normally a video job interview will be less stressful than a face-to-face interview. This can give you a chance to be yourself and have it your way as you can go through it from your home which is your most comfortable environment. Also, it could work to your advantage as it will help you relax and be more positive throughout the interview. If you want to make a good first impression, you just have to make sure you are being polite and pleasant.

Hopefully these tips will help you make a good first impression on your next video job interview. As you can see, the secret lies in developing a strong presence and standing out from competition!
