How to Make a Success out of Internet Marketing Consulting Locally

The internet. The world wide web. The purveyor of cyberspace. Whatever you call it, the internet is huge and it keeps on getting bigger. In fact, as we all know, it has become a standard when it comes to business and communication - you simply can’t compete without it.

Many businesses find it bewildering when trying to set up and market themselves on the internet and need solid gold advice. That’s where you come in.

If you are interested in becoming an internet marketing consultant, here are a few tips to help you make a living by taking a local approach...

The Reason Why it is Worth Going Local…

At this point, you may be reading this and shaking your head thinking, ‘why would you want to try and target local trade if you work in the internet biz?’

That is a valid point perhaps, but it’s also worth understanding that being an internet marketing consultant requires perseverance and self-promotion much like any other trade. Although the beauty of the internet does lie in the fact that you can work or communicate with anyone, anytime, anywhere in the world, people do still like to deal with others face to face, especially if they are thinking of parting with their hard-earned money.

With this in mind, here are a few reasons why it’s good to go (or at least start) local:

  • Being known in your local community is a valuable and solid way to establish yourself
  • If you are consulting for local businesses, you don’t have to waste time and money on travel
  • Of course, you can Skype, but as I will mention again in this article, people will be more inclined to give you the contract if they can deal with you face to face
  • Also, these businesses will like the fact that if they need you to come and see them, you are only around the corner
  • In business, it’s vital to build a solid foundation in order to achieve success, and what better way to do so than by stating locally?
  • Working within a community provides excellent web traffic and content (e.g. blog articles, social media posts) opportunities for your own business or brand

So now that’s been settled, let’s look at four definitive tips that will ensure local success...

Seek Out the ‘Old Hat’

What, you say? What I mean by this is, for local success you must reach out to local businesses, and by sniffing out the ones that are a bit behind the times, you can target them and offer your services.

They will want to thrive and make money themselves, and if it’s clear that their marketing strategies are a little ‘old hat’, you can explain to them how to direct their marketing efforts online by utilising your services.

This is a great way to get noticed in your local area and ironically, word of mouth is still one of the best forms of picking up punters. So get out the Yellow Pages, set out on foot, and branch out to lots of nearby businesses, it is sure to pay off!

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing: Know Your Stuff!

First of all, internet marketing isn’t some Mickey Mouse discipline, and in order to become successful at it (and make money), it’s vital to have equal measures of knowledge and practical experience.

In short, get qualified, then put all that theory into real life practice. There are plenty of excellent UK courses, both class room based and online which will cover all the areas of online marketing you need to know. Once you’ve completed phase one, what better way to get practical experience than marketing your own business? Start planning, put a content strategy into place and monitor your results through nifty things like Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools.

Advertise Via Local Forums

The internet is packed full of forums and free ad services, so it’s wise to use them when trying to target people in your local area.

For instance, go to Gumtree, refine your search to business and individuals (perhaps budding actors or musicians) within a 10 miles radius of you, email out well-crafted pitches which highlight the fact that you’re only up the road and can ‘pop in anytime’ and after a short while, you’ll receive some bites. That’s when you get the chance to go in, pick holes in their self-marketing efforts and dazzle them with your knowledge.

Learn Local Internet Marketing Techniques

Completely slap to the face obvious? Maybe. But…

It’s so obvious that it really does need mentioning as people do actually overlook this fact. As a local internet marketing consultant, you will be expected to help local business rank in search engines and purvey their brand to a specific target audience.

Of course, you’ll need to know all the online/internet marketing essentials to get positive results, but there are specific tips, tricks, techniques and approaches when it comes to local internet marketing, so learn them well.
