How to Master Creative CV Writing Techniques

In the recruitment industry, an interesting, well written, and empowering CV is thought to be the most important element to the overall job seeking process. Not only will a CV act as the first point of contact between you as a job seeker, and your prospective employer, but it also gives recruiters the chance to make a first impression of you.

Traditional Vs Creative CVs

Traditional CV formats, although are professional, do not excite recruiters or allow for job seekers to truly express themselves to their potential new employer. One of the most important things to consider is how to stand out from the crowd when applying for a job, particularly in times where competition for job opportunities is high.

Creative CV writing techniques prove to be valuable to job seekers, especially to those who are applying for positions within creative or media related industries. In fact, many industries encourage creative CVs as it gives recruiters the chance to see how a candidate can ‘think outside the box’ and showcase their talents.

Before you begin applying creative writing techniques to your CV, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What do I hope to achieve from my CV?
  2. What do I know about the companies I am creating this CV for?
  3. What are the specific requirements of the job I am applying for?
  4. How do my skills and experience match the job specifications?

Importance of Tailoring

It is important that you are able to tailor your CV to the exact job requirements while also writing and producing the CV in a creative format. Without tailoring the content of your CV, no matter how creative or artistic your CV is, it is unlikely to be considered by recruiters.

Writing Creative CVs

A truly creative CV should resemble your personality, your skills, and your motivations as a professional. It should speak volumes about your capabilities and creativity as an individual.

  • Ensure your CV is visually captivating and eye catching – this can be achieved with the aid of tables, graphs or other visual tools to help ‘tell your story’ as an experienced worker.
  • Establish your greatest skills and demonstrate them clearly on your CV – if your greatest skill is ‘design work’, then ensure your CV reflects this talent; if you are a professional writer, then showcase your talents as a wordsmith and use effective and engaging vocabulary.
  • Make certain that the text is completely engaging – although you have to tailor your CV accordingly, be sure to make every section of the document as engaging and interesting as possible. Mention career achievements and highlights that will help you to stand out from your competitors.
  • Use vocabulary that is empowering – irrespective of the industry you wish to work in, you should always write your CV using empowering and captivating text.
  • Be as unique as possible – the primary aim of your CV is to display your abilities and relevance to the role, whilst standing out from the crowd. By being as unique as possible, you can ensure that a recruiter will remember you from the hundreds of applicants’ CVs they will have viewed.
  • Think outside the box – be creative! Many individuals are now creative video CVs to help them showcase their artistic and creative abilities. Other effective CV techniques include printing a CV onto a T-shirt, and producing a CV in the form of a magazine or book.

Spend some time brainstorming the best ways to create your CV in the most creative and effective format. The most effort you put into building an impressive CV, the more successful you will be in the job searching and interview processes.
