Matthew’s McConaissance Decoded

“Alright, alright, alright” – the moment you hear this phrase you could be forgiven for thinking that it’s Matthew McConaughey standing next to you. Indeed for years McConaughey has been thought of someone who would only act in romantic comedies and nothing else. So, it was a bit of a surprise when he was chosen as the “Best Actor” at the 86th Annual Academy Awards this year.

However, McConaughey performed superbly in Dallas Buyers Club and the award was justified. So, how did his career get the resurrection from renaissance? And what can everyone else learn from him? Let us get the McConaissance decoded.

Don’t get typecast

Many employees are thought to be made for specific roles. What happens as a result is that they are typecast. Humans want change from time to time and when someone has been doing the same job for eons, they are bound to feel frustrated.

But the problem with many is that their office management thinks that they are made for the job they are in and nothing else. So, such employees just grit their teeth and go on doing the job that no longer inspires them, or they move to another company.

The only option here is for them to follow  McConaughey and take a radical role change. They just need to talk to their manager and ask for a different work profile. Who knows? The conversation may just work.

Don’t lose passion

Most people prefer those cushy 9 to 5 jobs, but in reality, they put in many more hours at work every day. For someone to excel in their career, they don’t just need to get the most out of their 9 to 5 job, but also go that extra mile as and when required. And this can only happen when someone feels passionate about what they do.

People that have advanced in their careers are the ones that are extremely passionate about what they do. This is exactly what happened to Matthew McConaughey as he put in some splendid performances in True Detective, a HBO drama and then the much acclaimed Dallas Buyers Club.

Don’t lose the challenge

Today is the age of innovation and companies love people who can think out of the box and come up with brilliant ideas. Then there are employees that do what they are told to do and there are employees that go beyond the line of duty so that their organizational goals are surpassed. Doing the same job 5 days a week, year on year can be very boring.

If someone really wants to make their work-life exciting, they need to challenge themselves and aim higher. When Matthew’s life is decoded, it can be easily seen that he challenged himself to do roles that wasn’t thought to be his type and then shined through them.

Don’t lose the goal

In his award acceptance speech, Matthew McConaughey said that he considers himself as his own role for the past 10 years. This is exactly what one should be looking at. Everyone has career goals that get forgotten after a few years at work. One should never forget what they want to achieve in life and this alone can keep them going.

These are some important career lessons that can be unearthed when Matthew’s McConaissance is decoded. If someone only keeps these four points in mind, they should be able to achieve more than anyone else thought they would.
