In Austria, nursing careers are more often than not, in the public sector. This means that the employment rules, career structure and benefits of civil servants applies to those working in Austria’s public health care sector.

When choosing to follow a nursing career path in Austria, it is important to ascertain the exact type of nursing you are more interested in, and then follow the correct path to gain entry to the applicable courses.

Main duties and responsibilities of a nurse:

  • Diagnosis

  • Planning

  • Organization

  • Supervision

  • Implement and follow official health care procedures

  • Evaluation of health care

Entry requirements for nursing courses

Depending on the area of specialism you are interested in, the entry requirements for the appropriate course may vary. However, below are the basic requirements that must be met in order to enroll at Schulen für allgemeine Gesundheitsund – school of general care in Austria.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old

  • Must demonstrate physical ability

  • Must demonstrate mental ability

  • Must be a suitable person for general care

  • Candidates are to obtain 10 school grades

There are various types of nursing positions and areas of specialism in Austria, ranging from the basic level qualified nurse, to a specialist nurse. Additionally, there are two categories of direct entry branch nurses, namely;

  • Qualified paediatric nurse

  • Qualified psychiatric nurse

Deciding on the area of nursing specialism is vital in order to ascertain the exact entry requirements to your selected nursing profession. Depending on your interests, you can select from a wide range of specialist areas, including but not limited to:

  • Specialist in infant care

  • Specialist in anaesthesia

  • Specialist in renal nursing

  • Specialist in intensive care

  • Specialist in hospital hygiene

  • Specialist in theatre

If a career as a nursing specialist is not of interest to you, there are a number of career opportunities in the public health care sector that involve a managerial, advisory, or teaching focus. Job vacancies for these positions can be in central health care governmental departments, or public sector health organizations.
