Nursing in Japan

Nursing careers in Japan can be in the public or private sector. A public sector nurse is given the title of public health nurse under the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare in accordance with art 2 in the Public Health Nurses, Midwives and Nurses act.

 

  • Public health centers

  • Public administration (municipalities, cities, industry and hospitals)

 

Basic nursing education is provided at various nursing colleges and universities in Japan. The basic nursing course is studied over a four-year period in universities while three-year training programs are available to high school graduates. Colleges offering the three-year nursing program are regulated under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, while the 4 year courses are provided by educational institutions as regulated under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

 

The basic subjects studied within the education curriculum of nursing schools in Japan include but are not limited to:

  • Basics of scientific thinking

  • Human body structure and functions

  • Diseases mechanism and recovery promotion

  • Basic nursing

  • Clinical nursing

  • Adult health nursing

  • Child health nursing

  • Mental health nursing

  • Psychiatric nursing

  • Clinical training

  • Nursing integration and practice

 

The Japanese government has initiated a number of measures to improve the quality and standards of the health care sector and nursing environment. These measures include:

  • Work-life balance campaign

  • Shorter hours and regular staff system

  • Revision of the Guidelines for Review of Working Hours

  • Improved paid holidays

  • New amendment ensuring workers with a child under 3 years of age shall work short hours or be excused from overtime on request
