Nursing in the Philippines

In the Philippines, registered nurses are required to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, known as a BS (Bachelor’s of Science). Nursing as a career in the Philippines is very popular, with reports stating over 200,000 nursing students graduate every year.

There are many nursing schools in the Philippines, which boast excellence reputations in the healthcare sector. With approximately 450 nursing schools to select from, students have a broad choice of where they wish to obtain their nursing qualifications and experience.

Top five nursing schools:

  • University of Sto. Tomas

  • Saint Louis University (SLU)

  • Silliman University

  • St. Paul University – Tuguegarao

  • Benguet State University

The nursing curriculum in the Philippines extends over a 5 year period. This will typically include study and theory based education, and practical work experience.

Upon successful completion of the BS in nursing, graduates must then pass the Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE). Only nurses who hold a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and whom pass the NLE, will obtain the certification to become a practicing nurse. The NLE is a long exam, comprising of 500 multiple-choice questions.

To be eligible to take the Nursing Licensure Examination, applicants must satisfy the following re-requisites:

  • Must be a Philippines citizens

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • Be in good health

  • Have a good moral character

  • Be the holder of a BS (Bachelor of Science) in Nursing from a nursing school that is accredited and recognized by the government

Once qualified as a registered nurse, you have a variety of career paths available to you in the Philippines. Nurses can choose to work in the public health sector or for privately funded hospitals; they can also opt to work as a Rural Health Nurse under Local Government Units.
