How to Organise Your Thoughts So You Become Less Stressed

Apart from time management, the key to handling stress is organising your thoughts. Since your brain essentially creates that feeling of distress, the first step to becoming stress-free is changing the way you think. As such many psychologists and motivational speakers primarily focus on the importance of positive thinking and try to convince you that the only way to be productive and achieve your goals is to improve the quality of your thoughts.

So, let’s check out how you can organise your thoughts to reduce stress and improve your life:

#1 Clear your mind

When you are stressed out, you have a lot of things on your mind. Things you need to do, things you need to remember such as appointments, work deadlines even grocery lists! This is probably making you feel overwhelmed with the prospect of not meeting your targets and facing failure. Since all of these thoughts are blocking your mind from thinking clearly, what you need to do is to close your eyes, meditate for a second and forget all your worries and obligations. After you have managed to do that, create an action plan to deal with your commitments one step at a time.

#2 Prioritise responsibilities

No matter how many to-do lists you have, they won’t help you reduce stress unless you prioritise your responsibilities in your mind. Obviously it’s easier just to write it down than do it, so the most important thing is to believe it. Focus on those things that require your attention first and then move on to your long-term goals. If you manage to prioritise your responsibilities, you also prioritise your thoughts and vice versa. Avoid procrastination and engaging in activities that are time-consuming when you can actually work towards completing your short-term goals.

#3 Avoid overthinking

Overthinking can increase your stress levels and distract you from living in the present. This is crucial especially if you have something you need to do that’s really urgent. Try not to overthink the past and future, instead focus on the now and what you can do at this very moment. Essentially, it’s all about not letting your thoughts distract you from what you should be doing and focusing on your surroundings.

#4 See the big picture

Think about what’s actually stressing you out. Is it your job? An assignment you have to complete? When you are stressed over those things you need to do, the most effective way to reduce anxiety is to take a step back and take a look at the big picture. Focus on what holds more weight and matters to you, and consider how responsibilities connect with each other towards making you more productive and successful.
