How to Practice Meditation in the Workplace

Ringing phones, e-mails, conferences, text messages, co-workers’ chats and piles of paperwork symbolize a typical workplace environment. If you are a beginning professional, they may seem easy to handle, but in the real sense, they can overload your brain when handled without a plan. Besides, there is a limit to the amount of work your body can handle in a given time. When the brain reaches this limit, it gets into fight-or-flight mode. Panic attacks, heart attacks, fainting and other work-related illnesses and disorders are observed from excessive stress on the body. Most people, however, don’t realize that a 30-minute meditation practice can go a long way in keeping the body rejuvenated and stress-free.

So, how do you go about meditating in the workplace?

Identify a Quiet Spot

The key to a good meditation session is having a quiet, serene place away from office distractions. There are various places in your office building that can serve as perfect spots for meditation. That unused office or quiet rooftop are perfect examples. If your office clears during lunch break, you can also use it as meditation spot. It is important to note that silence is essential for a successful meditation session. Take your time to identify a good spot.

Comfort is Crucial

Effective meditation requires you to remain still through the entire session. Therefore, you must sit or stand comfortably. If you plan to sit on the floor, it is advisable to do so on a large pillow. If you want to sit on your office chair, be sure to adjust it accordingly. In most instances, it is preferable to raise the back legs of your chair by an inch. You should be able to maintain an upright sitting posture as you meditate.

Observe and Relax

This is the most crucial part of meditation. You need to focus on the tension and stress in your body. Let your thought process relax. Do not focus on the negative things you have been through. If the boss gave you a mean look for arriving late, get over it. Then, allow your thoughts to come and go. Don’t get emotionally caught up in any thoughts. Let them dissipate. Develop a rhythmic breathing pattern and stick to it. If you have trouble focusing on your thoughts, you should start by focusing on your breathing pattern. It will help you get into the right mood for shifting the focus into your mind.

Invite Your Friends

How about meditating with your co-workers? While meditation is mainly about self-exploration, group meditation is socially powerful and more coherent. It helps you build stronger bonds with your colleagues. The procedure for holding a group meditation is similar to that of individual meditation. During the session, you might be tempted to peek and see what your colleagues are doing. Doing so will only destruct your thought process.

Finally, because it may not be possible to meditate on a regular basis, it is essential that you maintain a definite meditation schedule. If you prefer to meditate on Monday, make it a habit. You will be surprised how stress-free life in the office can be.
