Preparing for an interview can be one of the most daunting tasks a young person can face. In this economy even getting an interview is practically worth throwing a party over. So how do you successfully prepare for an interview, especially if it’s your first interview…ever?!
The simple answer is to do your homework. In this climate it doesn’t pay to cut corners. Research the company as much as possible. It won’t look particularly impressing if you know zilch when it comes to the company you are trying to get into. A commanding presence when you walk into the room with a firm handshake will present a professional image.
For an interview it would be a wise decision to take a fully up-to-date version of your CV. Your CV should have lots of great examples detailing why you’re competent, and highlighting great skills you have. An impressive CV can really make or break you when trying to get a job.
An important aspect is dress to impress! Showing up looking like you have just run a marathon, or woke up in a hedge is never going to get you far…believe me! A smart outfit to show you are not stumbling into the office from a night out in a club is always a smart (and sensible) way to get noticed.
And importantly, be yourself. Lying about your abilities and life experience will eventually get found out. Impress the interviewer(s) with your dazzling personality. Having great referees to back you up is an essential, as it will be checked.
So go forth and rock that interview, own it and do your best to outshine your opponents.
